Reminders
Nut-free school
Please may we ask you to ensure that you do not send your child to school with any food items containing nuts or nut oil. This includes chocolate spread which often contains hazelnuts and satay-style chicken or dips. We have children with life threatening nut allergies and must be a completely nut free school for this reason.
Christmas tree sale
Christmas trees will be available to buy outside school from 9.00am to 3.00pm during the following weekends: Sat 1st and Sun 2nd, Sat 8th and Sun 9th, Sat 15th and Sun 16th December. This is an excellent opportunity to buy high-quality Christmas trees and also support our school. The trees are sold by a former Fern Hill parent who has generously agreed to donate 25% of the money raised from the tree sales to Fern Hill.
A plea for tissues again!
If you can spare a box of tissues for your class or for the school office, we would be very grateful!

Christmas Lunch
A whole school Christmas Lunch will be served on Wednesday 12th December and will include roast turkey with all the trimmings and mince pie or ice cream for dessert. A vegetarian option is also available. If you would like to book Christmas lunch for your child, please remember that the deadline is midnight on Sunday 2nd December!
Fern Hill is an All Together Gold school!
We are very proud to announce that Fern Hill is one of just 172 schools to have been awarded the All Together School gold status accreditation for 2018. This is a fantastic achievement and reflects our on-going work to prevent and challenge bullying and embed the anti-bullying message in school life.
The Anti-Bullying Alliance’s All Together programme is a whole school anti-bullying programme for schools across England which provides resources and support to effectively audit current anti-bullying practice, develop a tailored anti-bullying action plan and help tackle bullying, including cyber-bullying.
You can find out more about the All Together School programme on the news page of our website.
Children in Need
Thank you for your generous donations to the BBC Children in Need charity last week. We raised £440 from the collection at the gates and the sale of the pin badges and wristbands and another £376 at the PSA's special cake sale after school. A fabulous total!
Year 4 explore the Thames
Last week, Year 4 spent a fantastic day learning all about the River Thames with Neil and Sam from the Thames Explorer Trust. The children learnt about the different animals that live in or near to the river. They also discovered how humans have impacted on the quality of the water. The children spent a couple of hours on the foreshore testing the pH level of the river, spotting wildlife and dipping for living creatures. They concluded that the river is not as polluted as it first looks but it is not perfectly clean. Did you know that the River Thames is tidal from Teddington Lock to its mouth?
- Mrs Brechin, Year 4 Class Teacher
Christmas Concerts
We would like to inform you that the Christmas concerts for Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will now be held in the beautiful setting of All Saints Church, Kingston. There will be two concerts, one for Year 3 and 4 and one for Year 5 and 6, both on Tuesday 18th December. The Year 3 and 4 concert will be held in the morning and the Year 5 and 6 concert in the afternoon. The exact timings will be confirmed as soon as possible.
Tree Tops News
Big shout out and thank you!
The children and staff at Tree Tops would like to say a big thank you to all the parents and children who donated “Pennies for Pudsey”. We used the coins that were donated to cover a collage of Pudsey Bear that the children had made the week before and we raised £14.56. Thank you for helping us to 'show our spots'!
Feeding the birds
This week we have been thinking about the changing seasons and what we can do to help the wildlife around us now the weather is turning colder. We have started the process of decorating yoghurt pots to turn them in to bird feeders that can be hung from trees in the garden or from balconies.
We talked about different ways we can encourage wildlife to visit, even if we don’t have a garden and, remembering we are a nut-free school, we made sure we didn't use peanuts in our bird-feeders!
More information about creating a wildlife friendly area and how to make the bird feeders can be found here.
After School Club News
Look out for further information coming home next week on the after school clubs we'll be running in the spring term. We’ve had a positive response to our requests for donations for our Christmas Fair Raffle, but we still need more as the raffle prizes are a key element of our Christmas fundraising. If you run your own business (or know someone else who does) and would be happy to support Fern Hill by donating a hamper gift or a voucher please email the PSA on fernhillpsa@gmail.com. Thank you.
And please remember to put aside any bottles of wine or spirits, toys, games, toiletries or other items that you can donate for our tombola and mufti day on Friday 7th December. Thank you very much.
Sponsorship boards
A huge thank you to everyone who signed up to have a Curchods board outside their home to promote our Christmas tree sales. After a slow start, we eventually had 92 families sign up ensuring that we’ve raised a fantastic total of £920 through the generous sponsorship of Curchods.
