Autism Awareness Week
Next week, we will be taking part in Autism Awareness Week. Around 700,000 people in the UK are on the autism spectrum. Together with their families, this means that autism is a part of daily life for 2.8 million people. Autism Awareness Week offers the children the opportunity to reflect on what makes us all different and how this can be celebrated. Some of the resources we will be using can be found on the National Autistic Society website here.
After School Club Notices
The following catch up sessions will run next week:
Monday 1st April – Start to Sing
Tuesday 2nd April – Choir, Tag Rugby & Advanced Chess (a free bonus session!)
Wednesday 3rd April – Junior Football, Dance/Zumba & Hockey

Curriculum Evening
Don’t forget to register your place at this year’s Curriculum Evening which will be held on Tuesday 2nd April at 6.45 pm. It’s an opportunity for parents and carers across all year groups to gain a greater insight into teaching and learning at Fern Hill through four workshops which will cover a wide range of topics: teaching ‘maths for mastery’, learning platforms for you to use at home, excellence in behaviour, and how our curriculum inspires a love of learning. A summary of the content of each workshop is available on our website here.
To reserve your place, please click here to be taken to the registration form.
We wish Mrs Brock a temporary fond farewell as she begins her maternity leave next week. Good luck Mrs Brock, we are looking forward to meeting your new addition very soon!
Keep up to date with information about local events and activities on our Community page. There are a few new posts, including an invitation to SpringFest at Latchmere Recreation Ground this weekend and details of local swimming lessons and an athletics and hockey club. If you would like an item included on this page, please email the school office at office@fernhill.rbksch.org with details. You can find the Community page in the main menu of the website here.
We welcomed Spring at Fern Hill this week with the return of our ‘living eggs’. On Monday, ten eggs arrived in an incubator and by Wednesday we had ten beautiful chicks! The children have been amazed and excited to watch the first stages of a chicken’s life cycle, from hatching to a chick. The chicks will be spending the weekend with Miss Davies and next week, they will spend time with the children in their classrooms. Did you know chicks can take one to twenty fours hours to hatch and that breaking out of their shell is called “pipping”? To help them break out of their shell, chicks have a lump on their top beak called an “egg tooth” which falls off soon after hatching.
'A Glint of Gold'
Year 4 children rounded off their learning about the Egyptians with two rousing performances of 'A Glint of Gold'. The hall rafters were raised by their amazing singing! Well done to everyone for learning their lines, dance moves, actions and lyrics; we are all so proud of you!
Reception have had a fantastic week with two very special visits. On Tuesday, the Learning Street arrived to bring their ‘People Who Help Us’ topic to life. The children had the opportunity to play Dr. Doolittle in the veterinary surgery, investigate the latest crime scene as police officers, role-play as construction workers and dig for dinosaur bones as palaeontologists! They rounded off the week with an appointment with Mr Prickles, a gorgeous African Pygmy hedgehog who lives with Miss Evans.
Kingston Infant Singing Festival
Last Friday, all the Year 2 children performed at All Saints Church in Kingston as part of the Infant Singing Festival with four other schools from the Borough. It was a long afternoon but all the children did fantastically well and really sang their hearts out. Their own ‘Fern Hill’ song, which was all about a peanut vendor from Cuba, was a huge hit and they performed it wonderfully with great joy and enthusiasm. Well done to all the children and thank you very much to the parents and carers who walked with us to the Church and to the families who came along to the performance to support us.
Sports News
An end to another busy sporting term. We've seen hockey, netball, rugby and lots of football for many of the year groups. Well done to everyone who has attended a trial this term and giving themselves the opportunity. If you didn't make the team this time, keep trying - there are lots more events to come in the summer.
Finally, a special mention to the Year 6 girls’ football team. In October, they qualified for the December finals - and a place at the London Youth Games this week. They have also competed in the Kingston District Cup, getting as far as the as the semi-finals. We all travelled to Barkingside, Essex on Tuesday for the Games…
“We had an exhilarating time, it was such an achievement to get this far, and an experience we will never forget. We are all very proud of each other for putting in so much effort and everyone has become a much stronger football player. This is something that we hope other passionate football players in our school can one day experience.”
- Year 6 girls' team
Attached to this newsletter are details about a girls-only rugby taster session at London Scottish RFC. They have a thriving girls section, and this year, the U18s got through to the area final of the National Cup. Although they narrowly lost (by only 2 points!), this places them as the 7th best team in the country - so a great inspiration to the younger girls who want to play. All the details are on the flyer, or please come and see me, Mrs Lawn, and I will be happy to provide more information.
Looking forward to a break, and then coming back with Year 5 football in the first week of term - a kick off to another busy season. It's going to be good!

Easter Holiday Activities at Fern Hill

Don’t forget Stagecoach join us next term, every Saturday, and are holding a Discovery Day on 6th April from 10.00 - 11.30 am for children who may be interested in joining.
