Reminders
Lunches
Lunches for the second half of the summer term will be available to order via ParentPay from early next week. Please make a note in your diary that the deadline for ordering lunches for the first week back after the half term break will be Monday 20th May.
Tree Tops
Please may we remind you that all Tree Tops Breakfast and After School sessions MUST be booked in advance. This is to ensure we have the correct staff to pupil ratio for each session. If a child arrives for a Breakfast club or After School club session which has not been booked in advance and Tree Tops do not have the correct staff to pupil ratio to accommodate them, a call will be made home and the child will need to wait in the school office until they are collected by a parent or carer. Thank you for your understanding.

Cath Howe Book Launch Invitation
We wish all our Year 6 children the very best of luck next week when they will be sitting their SATs (Statutory Assessment Tests). Do try and have a good night’s rest and a filling breakfast before the tests and don’t forget a water bottle to keep you hydrated! You’ll be sitting the test in the morning so please arrive at school on time, every day. We know you will all do very well and are looking forward to waving you off on your trip to the Guildford Spectrum on Friday when the SATs are over!
Deputy Headteacher Appointment
Congratulations to Mrs Stephenson who has been appointed Deputy Headteacher from September. A second Deputy Headteacher, Miss Crook, has also been appointed to work alongside Mrs Stephenson and our Assistant Heads Mrs Davies and Mrs Figueiredo. The increase in leadership capacity this gives the school will provide greater opportunities for us to support our children and families.
Half Term Activities
There are a number of exciting activities for all ages taking place at school during the May half term break; please have a look at our holiday activities page on the website here for more information. Pleiades and Mother Nature Science are running a holiday camp every day from Tuesday 27th to Friday 31st May, and Masquerade Theatre Arts have two day performance workshops on Thursday 30th and Friday 31st.
Cath Howe, Fern Hill’s Writer in Residence who runs our performing arts festival, Fern Speak, has published a new book called ‘Not My Fault’. Cath would like to invite the children who have worked with her for Fern Speak to attend the book launch at Waterstones in Richmond on 16th May. The invitation is attached below. If you would like to join Cath, please email her on ellaontheoutside@gmail.com to let her know you are attending. All children need to be accompanied by a parent or carer at the launch.
The Year 5 School Journey
Welcome back to our intrepid Year 5 children who returned today from their residential trip to Kingswood’s Grosvenor Hall in Kent. They have spent the past four days challenging themselves with new experiences, developing life skills and having a huge amount of fun! The children who arrived back at school today, exhausted but exhilarated, all agreed they had memories to last a lifetime. Please have a look at their blog and the photo gallery from their trip for a taste of their adventures. We are still uploading the last few blogs and lots of photos from the last day and evening so check back over the weekend too! While Mr Waiting was the official trip photographer, we’d like to say a very big thank you to Tanisha’s mom, Mrs Thakur, who took some wonderful pictures of the children during their stay.
Wellness Week is born!
For a number of years now we have run Active Week before the May half term break; this year we are making a change!
It is important that we look at the child (and ourselves) as a whole being - inside and out. Rather than only concentrating on providing physical health, which is obviously very important, we should also be looking at mental health and lifestyle and the ways in which all three of these areas can be supported and nourished, in order to keep us healthy.
So, Wellness Week has been born and will run from Monday 20th - Friday 24th May 2019. We’ll be focusing on: engaging in physical activities and sports sessions; learning to understand the importance of healthy eating through workshops and other activities; finding ways to develop good ‘mental health habits’ which the children (and the teachers) can continue to use throughout their lives; celebrating ‘Global Outdoor Learning Day’, which is on Thursday 23rd May, with a range of activities and lessons that can be held outside.
Our Sponsored Run is on Wednesday 22nd and Sports Day for children in Reception, KS1, and KS2 on Friday 24th May. Nursery children are holding their own Sports Day events on Monday 20th May. Further information about the Sponsored Run and Sports Day are attached below. Please return your permission slips for Sports Day as soon as possible and by Tuesday 23rd May at the latest.
I hope you, and your children, enjoy this new-look week, and I look forward to seeing many of you at Sports Day on Friday 24th. Thank you for your support.

Sports News
Last weekend, our Year 6 Girls’ Football team who played at the London Youth Games watched the Women’s FA Cup Final at Wembley…
'On Saturday the 4th of May, the Year 6 Girl’s football team were lucky enough to go to Wembley to see the Women’s FA Cup Final. Manchester City and West Ham United played against each other. 60 minutes in, and no one had scored a goal. Towards the end of the game, Manchester City scored a goal, then another, and then another! The final score was 3-0 to Manchester City. We all thoroughly enjoyed the match.'

Celebrating the NHS
This week, children in Year 3 and 4 have been enjoying workshops from the Bounce Theatre group. They used the history of the NHS as their inspiration during art and drama sessions, acting out their own past experiences of visiting a hospital for treatment before creating ‘70th birthday cards’ to thank all the hard-working employees of the NHS! Some of their creative endeavours will be shown at a summer exhibition in July at the National Archives in Kew.
Year 3 visit to Gatton Park
Over the past two weeks, each of our Year 3 classes visited Gatton Park near Reigate to participate in science and art activities relating to their studies on plants. They examined seeds under a microscope before finding out about seed dispersal methods and taking part in the ‘Seed Olympics’ games!
A careful study of the composition of Henri Matisse inspired some fantastic art work from the children, based on their observations of Gatton Park’s beautiful Edwardian gardens, designed by the English landscape designer Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.
TEAM POINTS
Our Team Points Monitors have been away on their residential trip so Team Points awarded this week will be carried forward; we'll add them to next week's tally and report back here!

Summer Fair – please sign up for a Curchods board!
Local estate agents Curchods are kindly supporting Fern Hill PSA by advertising our Summer Fair on their branded boards. Just like the Christmas Fair, when we raised over £900, Curchods will donate £10 for every board that goes up outside parents’ or carers’ houses or flats. The more boards that go up, the more money we will raise to benefit our children!
To have a board outside your home, all you need to do is email the following information to fernhillpsa@gmail.com by TODAY, Friday 10th May. There is no need to print out or return any forms. Please include the following information in your email: your surname, address including postcode, telephone number, email address and any special instructions regarding the placement of the board.
Please note these are NOT ‘for sale’ signs – they advertise our Fair. Curchods will arrange for the boards to be put up three weeks before the Fair and removed the week after the Fair.
Thank you for your support and a big thank you to those parents who have already signed up for one.
Summer Fair – sunflower fact of the week!
We hope your sunflowers are thriving thanks to the recent rain! This week’s sunflower fact: did you know that every sunflower can contain up to 2,000 seeds?
PSA Committee Meeting
Please don’t forget that our next meeting is on Thursday 16th May, from 7.30pm to 9.00pm in the Small Hall. Everyone is welcome to come along and we look forward to seeing you there!
Thanks for your support
