Reminders
Lunches
Please don’t forget to book your child’s lunches for the second half of the summer term. You can find the menu and information on how to book on our website here. The deadline for booking lunches for the first week back after the May half term break, week commencing 3rd June, has now passed so please send your child into school with a packed lunch if you have not booked a meal. The deadline for ordering lunches for week commencing 10th June is midnight on Sunday 2nd June.
Important notice for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2: children in these year groups are entitled to a free school lunch under the Universal Infant Free School Meal Scheme. Although you do not need to pay for the lunches, you MUST order them via ParentPay and make a selection from the menu.
Illness
If your child is unwell and has vomiting or diarrhoea, they should not return to school for 24 hours after their symptoms have gone. This will help stop the spread of bugs across the school. Please support us with reminding your children how important it is to wash their hands with soap regularly throughout the day and not just rely on the hand sanitisers available around the school.
Term-time Absence
Please note that any requests for term-time absence must be addressed to Mr Scott in writing. Letters can be sent by email to office@fernhill.rbksch.org or handed in at the school office. A written request should also be made if you intend to collect your child early, before the school day ends, in order to go on holiday. Thank you for your understanding and support.

PSA Summer Fair Competitions
A reminder for the Year 5 children following the Bikeability programme the first week back after the half term break: don’t forget your bike and helmet, you’ll need them every day! You can leave your bike in the one of the bike racks when you get to school but make sure you lock it and keep the key safe. You will be outside for the length of the course so do bring a waterproof jacket if it looks like rain. If you are attending the course in the afternoon, you’ll need to be at the school office by 1.00 pm so grab an early lunch at 12.30 pm.
Fern Hill Music Evening
Calling all our musically talented pupils in Years 3 to 6! The Fern Hill Music Evening, which will be held at school on Tuesday 245th June at 6.00 pm, is a wonderful opportunity for your child to play a piece of music to an audience of Fern Hill families. If your child would like to perform, please complete the reply slip at the bottom of the attached letter and return it to the school office by Monday 3rd June. Don’t forget, the voice is also an instrument and singers are very welcome!
A Wellness Week Round up!
With this year being more of a focus on the whole person, the activities and opportunities were slightly more varied than in previous Active Weeks.
On the sporting front, Year 6 enjoyed yoga: learning some relaxation techniques ready to take into their next phase of school life. Year 2 also had yoga, giving them the chance to finally relax after their tests as well. Years 2, 3 and 4 got stuck into the introduction to rugby they had and many a child was overheard to say that they wanted to play some more. Years 5 and 6 had some exciting basketball skills sessions and Year 5 got a chance to learn some karate moves. Reception and Year 1 were having fun with multi skills and Year 1 were also lucky to have some ball skills coaching. Not to be outdone, Daisy Class welcomed back their favourite tennis coaches for an additional session. A huge thanks to London Scottish RFC, Let's Play, Pleiades, Spartans Basketball, Jay Gauci, Teddy Tennis and Sarah Tucker for helping make our Wellness Week active and supporting our physical health.
Healthy Eating workshops were held for all year groups, with discussions about sugar swaps and ways to make lunchboxes and snacks healthier for us. Years 2 and 3 then had a go at making healthy snack sandwiches, choosing the ingredients themselves. Year 1 made healthy salads and voted on their favourite root vegetable. Thanks to the parents who came in to lend a hand in these sessions.
Throughout the week, classes have been doing different activities relating to understanding and supporting the mental health of themselves and others around them. Even our Reception children spent time during their assembly to practice a spot of meditation! This is an ongoing initiative, and there will be many more opportunities on this theme in the coming weeks and months. Staying healthy mentally is crucial to being healthy physically and this is something that we will continue to promote to the children.
Global Outdoor Classroom Day was on Thursday 23rd May, and to celebrate this, classes were encouraged to take as much learning and activities outside as they could: Year 6 were seen investigating the pond whilst writing descriptive pieces about nature; lots of classes had reading sessions in the Secret Garden; some took part in maths data handling lessons doing a traffic survey of Richmond Road and Year 3 children ran their own Seed Dispersal Olympics during their science lessons.
The Sponsored Run
The whole school community from Daisy Class right up to Year 6, including some of the staff, braved the heat to run laps round the school site to raise money for a to-be-chosen charity and a school initiative. Encouragement, resilience, determination and lots of effort were shown by everyone. A huge thank you to the parents, and grandparents, who came and helped with the event- we couldn't do it without your support. And a big ‘Thank You’ to our afternoon Daisy Class children for the welcome water spraying - Year 6 and I really appreciated it!
Sports Day
The week started with Daisy Class’ Sports Day. The children had great fun running six different races including an obstacle race, beanbag balancing race and the classic egg and spoon race and loved having their grown-ups there to watch them compete. They enjoyed a well-deserved ice lolly and a medal to celebrate! Well done, Amazing Daisies!
And so, to the final event - Reception to Year 6 Sports Day on Dinton Field. More of this after half term, when we will be able to tell you which team won on the day. But thank you, in advance, for supporting your children at this annual event. I hope you enjoyed the day.
Please have a look at our Wellness Week photo gallery on the website for a taste of what the children, and teachers, have enjoyed so much. Have a great half term break; lots of events happening in the next short half term which I look forward to telling you about.

Our annual Parent & Carer Survey is now available online for families to complete, to give us your views about Fern Hill and your child’s experience here.
You can access the survey via this link: https://forms.gle/2H253wxwJQQWUhK16
We very much value the feedback of our parent and carer community to encourage your participation we are offering an incentive! The year group which receives the most survey responses will enjoy their own mufti (non-uniform) day later this term. The survey is designed to enable you to complete a questionnaire for each of your children attending Fern Hill so if you have more than one child here, please take the opportunity to do a survey for each. More than one parent can also complete a survey for each child.
We will share the results of the survey with you before the end of the school year and progress on the actions plan to address any issues raised during the autumn term.
If you would prefer to complete the survey in writing, rather than online, paper copies are available from the school office. The survey will be open until Monday 10th June.
Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey; we look forward to receiving your feedback.
Every week, as part of their Personal, Health and Social Education (PHSE) and Citizenship programme, the children discuss a specific newsworthy topic in depth and then vote ‘for’ or ‘against’ a statement related to it, inspiring and challenging them to ‘think beyond the obvious’, justify their opinions and make a stand towards what they believe it right. You can find out more about the Votes for Schools Project here.
This week the children have been discussing, and voted on, whether an individual should have a responsibility for other people's health. The children thoughtfully cast their votes, in favour of the motion.
The 'Votes for Schools' project is part of our journey to become a UNICEF UK Rights Respecting School. This week, our Rights Respecting School Ambassadors handed out a letter from Mr Scott with a Q&A sheet all about this journey which will benefit the whole school community, from pupils and staff to parents and governors. A copy of the letter and Q&A sheet is available here.
