School Photographs
Thank you to all the families who have ordered a school photograph. The photographs are currently in production and will be delivered to the school by the end of next week. They will come home with the children. If you have any queries, please contact our school photographer, Kans Bahara, directly via email at info@inTime-Photography.com or by telephone on 07931 593 169.
Saturday Football at Fern Hill
Mr Langridge and Mr Guyatt will be running their last Saturday Football at Fern Hill session on Saturday 14th December.
On Friday 13th December, children are invited to join in the festive fun and show their support for Save the Children's Christmas Jumper Day by wearing a Christmas jumper instead of their school uniform jumper or cardigan. Please don't feel you have to buy your child a Christmas jumper if they don't already have one - a school jumper decorated with tinsel is perfect! This is not a mufti day so children should still wear their school polo shirt or shirt and tie and school skirt or trousers. We’ll be on the gates in the morning to collect any donations you’d like to give to Save the Children.

There will also be catch up sessions for Hockey club on Wednesday 11th December, Cricket club on Thursday 12th December and Pottery club on Friday 13th December.

Lunches
On Thursday 19th December, children in Reception through to Year 6 will have their class Christmas parties. No school lunches will be served on this day. If you have ordered a lunch via ParentPay for Thursday 19th, your order will be cancelled and, if relevant, your account credited. Your Class Rep will be in touch regarding arrangements for your class party lunch.
Sadly, we will be saying goodbye to Mrs Slaughter at the end of this term. She will be greatly missed by everyone, especially the children and staff in Year 1 and 2. Mrs Slaughter has been with us for sixteen years and has seen many, many families go up through the year groups. She is leaving to pursue other interests and we wish her all the very best.
Join the Fern Hill Plog-olution!
In January we will be making a difference to our local environment with the Fern Hill Plogging Club! Please see the attached letter, which was sent out today via ParentPay, for more information. If you would like your child to join the Fern Hill Plog-olution, please complete and return the reply slip by next Thursday 12th December.
Winter Concerts
We are looking forward to the children's Winter concerts which begin next week. Please do check the Key Dates section of this newsletter to see when your child's performance is.
Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 concert performances take place in the Large Hall. Access for families attending will be via the external doors to the Hall only. For the safety of all the children, we ask parents and carers not to come into or leave school via school reception for these concerts. The black gates which secure the rear of the school will be open (and supervised) before and after performances.
The two concerts for Nursery will be held in the Small Hall so families should come into school via reception for these.
Our juniors in Years 3 to 6 will be performing at the wonderful All Saints Church in Kingston. If you have a child in one of these year groups, you will have received a letter with further information about their concert. If you haven’t already done so, please return the permission slip to your class teacher as soon as possible. Thank you.
On Monday, the children had a visit from Heidi Gomes who is a volunteer School Ambassador with The Lunchbowl Network.
The Lunchbowl Network was set up fifteen years ago to help orphaned and vulnerable children living in Kiberia, which is a very poor district of Nairobi in Kenya. Initially, the charity offered 450 children a good lunch on a Saturday; now they provide the children with access to education and route out of poverty through their two nurseries and primary school. During Monday’s assembly, the children learnt about the work Lunchbowl do with The Brothers Trust, another local charity foundation run by the actor Tom Holland’s family. Together they fund two coaches to take the children to and from the schools and run a rugby club and lunch programme on Sundays too.
In July 2018, on the last day of term, Fern Hill children donated their school shoes to the children Lunchbowl support and it was lovely to hear how excited they were to receive and wear them! Next week we will be fundraising for Lunchbowl children again by selling pocket money gifts made by their families. These beautiful, hand-made items will be on sale every day after school, outside school reception, and include soapstone hearts, hippos and dishes, bracelets and beaded and wooden keyrings. Prices range from £1 - £4 for these perfect stocking fillers! Just £1 will feed three children with Lunchbowl, so please do come along and have a look.
You can find out more about the work of The Lunchbowl Network here.
Booking is now open for our Spring term clubs!
Details of our after school and lunchtime clubs running in the Spring term are now available on the website here.
We are delighted to announce three new clubs for the new year: Teddy Cricket for Years 1 and 2, Netball for Years 5 and 6 and Instrumatics, a music lunchtime club, for all years.
Instrumatics is run by our Choir Leader, Mrs Ingram. The club is all about learning musical skills through fun games with instruments and children will cover a range of age appropriate musical elements, including rhythm, beat, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre and texture, physical and graphic notation, building chords, conducting and playing accompaniments. Mrs Ingram will be running two sessions, one from 12.30 – 1.00 pm for children in Years 1 and 2 and another from 1.00 – 1.30 pm for children in Years 3-6. Children will need to bring in a packed lunch to eat before their session.
Bookings for our school run clubs (Netball, Junior Cricket, Infant & Junior Football, Rugby, Karate, Choir, Hockey, Gardening Club, Instrumatics, Dance and Athletics) are now open on ParentPay. Please complete the application form which is attached here and also available to download from the website and return it to the school office by Friday 20th December. There are a small number of paper copies of the application form available in school reception.
To book a club run by an external provider, please contact the provider directly. Application forms and further information are available on the website here.
Year 4 visit Pizza Express
Last week, Year 4 children visited Pizza Express as part of their topic work on Italy.
I really liked this trip because we got to make and eat dough balls at the restaurant. We were able to talk about the trip whilst walking back to school with our friends as well as catching up on other news. We learnt that Margeritta Pizza was named after a queen. When we got back to school we ate the pizza we made. It was delicious. We would definitely go again!

PSA News and Events
Thank you for your festive donations!
A big thank you to everyone who has so generously donated to our Family Present Stall. We’ve received a wonderful selection of gifts for the KS1 children to choose from at the event on Friday 13th December. If you still have items that you’d like to donate, please bring them in to school reception next week up until Wednesday 11th. Thank you as well to all those parents and children who donated either money or gifts on the gates this morning in aid of the PSA’s Christmas fundraising. We really appreciate your support.
KS2 Festive Disco – Friday 13th December – tickets have now sold out!
We’re delighted that the disco tickets have sold so well and we’re sure this brand-new event will be a fabulous festive celebration for the older children. Please remember that there are two separate discos during the evening of Friday 13th December: one for Years 3 and 4 from 4.15 to 5.15pm and one for Years 5 and 6 from 6.00pm to 7.00pm. For both discos, doors will open 15 minutes before the disco starts to allow children to be signed in. We’d also ask that children are collected promptly at the end of each disco please.
Please note that all children must be signed in on arrival, and signed out when they are collected, by an appropriate adult aged over 16. Tree Tops staff will not be able to accompany children and sign them in or out. No mobile phones are allowed at this event – any phones found will be taken for safekeeping by staff. There is no need for children to bring cash but they should bring water bottles with them.
KS1 Present Stall for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 – Friday 13th December
We’re looking forward to our very first Family Present Stall for KS1 next week. As this is a school fundraising event, we’re asking for a donation of £2 per child and of course you’re very welcome to give more if you wish. Children should hand their money in an envelope to their class teacher during next week. We’re sure the younger children are looking forward to this special event!
Thank you to all our lovely volunteers!
The PSA would like to say a massive thank you to all those parents who have so kindly volunteered to help at all our festive events next week. Without your support, these events couldn’t happen so we really do appreciate your commitment.
Christmas tree sales continue this weekend
Don’t forget that the Christmas tree sales outside school continue this weekend from 9.00am to 3.00pm on Sat and Sun. 50% of all the money raised from the tree sales will go directly to Fern Hill, so please do get your tree from them and support out school! Last year, these tree sales raised a fantastic £630. The trees will also be on sale for one more weekend on Sat 14th and Sun 15th December.
