Reminders
Please lock up your bike!
If your child cycles to school, please ensure that their bike is securely locked. We have noticed a number of children leaving their bikes unlocked in the staff bike rack, outside school reception. Bikes left here are very vulnerable to theft – please encourage your child to use the bike racks near the junior playground gates as this area of the school is secured during the school day. Thank you.
Water Bottles
Please make sure that your child has a refillable water bottle with them in school every day. They can fill them up at the water dispenser in school or the water fountains in the playground.

Both these programmes run for six weekly sessions. ‘Triple P’ starts on Tuesday 25th February in Surbiton at 6.30 pm and ‘Time out for parents’ on Thursday 27th in Chessington at 10.00 am. For further information, please see the attached leaflets.
It’s Bug Busting day on 31st January!
We’ve detected head lice in most year groups across the school. Please check your child this weekend. The NHS recommends the wet combing method – not chemical lotions – and you can find their detailed advice here.
You can also have a look at the Bug Busting website run by the charity, Community Hygiene Concern. Bug Busting is a head louse detection and eradication method that doesn’t relying on products containing neuro-toxic pesticides or other expensive ingredients, just a specially designed combs and your usual shampoo and conditioner.
Arts Week...it’s been about discovering the 'Art of Mathematics’
Each year group has explored a variety of artists and styles of art, linking their work to different mathematical activities.
Nursery and Reception children have been reading the book ‘The Dot’ to aid their investigation of circles and Year 4 have examined the ‘magic of the circle’, turning circles into spheres and holes with sketching! Across the school, the children have been practising using a pair of compasses and emulating both classical and contemporary artists including Kandinsky, Goldsworthy, Delaunay, Mondrian and Klee. Year 6 have been inspired by the mathematician Fibonacci, using the Fibonacci number sequence to design circles and spirals. Children have researched shape and symmetry too in Year 3, scaling miniature chocolate bars and creating pictures using fractions, right angles, horizontal and vertical lines. Pattern and symmetry have been the focus for children in Year 1 and 2 who have been printing with blocks and creating arrays.Year 5 have tested their mental maths with colour by number using mathematical equations and trying out some 'random art' to create a huge pixelated display where no two pieces are the same...we can’t wait to see the end result!
The children’s work will be on display in the classrooms and corridors and you are warmly invited to come into school for the Arts Week Exhibition on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th February from 3.30 pm. Have a look at the Arts Week Gallery on our website for a taster of some of the amazing pieces you will see.

KS2 Cinema Night – Friday 7th February – tickets now sold out
Thank you to all those who bought tickets for this year’s KS2 Cinema Night showing School of Rock and we’re sure it’s going to be a great evening. Tickets are now sold out, but if we receive any returns, we will update parents as soon as possible.
There is a pyjama party theme to the evening, so children are welcome to come in their onesies or PJs if they choose to, although this is optional! Children will need to bring a printed copy of their ticket with them on the night. Tickets will be exchanged for a hotdog (meat or vegetarian) and a drink of squash. Additional drinks, popcorn and vegan-friendly sweets will be available for purchase on the night at £1 per item. Please send your child in with some cash if you would like them to be able to buy anything extra. Water will be available and can be topped up for free. Please can children also bring their own refillable drinks bottle to cut down on plastic waste.
Doors open at 5.25pm and collection is at 8.00pm.
Please be aware that a responsible adult will need to bring your child, sign them in and collect them from the school hall. Tree Tops staff cannot sign children in. Any child arriving without a parent/carer/adult responsible for signing them in will necessitate a phone call for permission. Please bear with us while we check the children in and out – it is for their safety and security.
We understand that some of the older children may want to bring their mobile phones. However, we strongly recommend that they leave them at home – any phone seen being used during the film will be looked after until the child is collected. Children will be supervised throughout the event by parent helpers and teachers.
Volunteers needed for Cinema Night please
To help Cinema Night run smoothly, we do need plenty of parent volunteers. You don’t need to volunteer for the whole evening: volunteers are especially needed to help set up the event from 4.30pm to 5.15pm, to help sign children in from 5.25pm to 5.45pm and to help sign children out and clear up from 8.00pm to 8.35pm. If you can help at any of those slots, or for the whole evening, then please email fernhillpsa@gmail.com All volunteers are very much appreciated.
Thank you for your support.
