Poetry Competition
Just a reminder that the closing date for the Spark! School Book Awards Poetry Competition is just two weeks away. If your child would like to write and illustrate a poem based on one of the shortlisted books, it should be no bigger than A4 size and handed to their class teacher by Friday 25th March at the latest. Their poem can be written in any style they wish and there will be prizes for the winners who will be announced in assembly and shared on the Google Classroom.
Mr Scott will be holding an open meeting on 31st March at both 2:30 pm and 6:30 pm for Fern Hill families to learn more about our conversion to academy status and the benefits of being part of a multi-academy trust, alongside The Kingston Academy. If you would like to join the meeting, please let us know via this linked form: Parent Forum - Joining KET. You can also use the form to raise any questions you would like to be addressed or to give us your views if you cannot attend.
Red Nose Day
Next Friday 18th March, we’ll be joining schools all over the UK to raise money for Comic Relief with a Superhero mufti day. Children and staff can dress up as their favourite superhero (and this includes a superhero of their own creation!).
We’ve set up a JustGiving page with Comic Relief and would be really grateful for any donation you’d like to make; we know we’ve asked for a lot recently but any amount you can give, however small, will help to change lives and provide essential support for people who need it – in the UK and abroad. You can find out more about how Comic Relief will use your donations here.
We’ll be selling a limited number of red noses on Thursday next week in time for the big day. They are priced at £1.50 each - we’ll let you know when they arrive!
Parents’ Evening will be held on Wednesday 20th April, 4:00 – 7:00 pm and Thursday 21st April, 1:45 – 6:00 pm. This is for the whole school excluding Chestnut and Foxglove classes who will have their Parents’ Evening this term.
You will be able to book a ten-minute appointment with your class teacher through our Parents’ Evening System. The booking window will open at 10:00 am on Monday 21st March and close at 10:00 am Monday 28th March. Virtual and in person appointments will be held on different days during the following times:
Wednesday 20th April, 4:00 – 7:00 pm — virtual appointments via video call
Thursday 21st April, 1:45 – 6:00 pm — in person appointments at school
Nursery will have a number of additional appointments available during the school day on Monday 25th April from 1:00 – 3:00 pm.
You will receive a letter next week with further information and a link to the Parents’ Evening System. On Thursday 21st April, school will close early at 1:30 pm for children in Reception through to Year 6. Nursery will continue as normal. There will be no after school or lunchtime clubs the first week back after Easter but Tree Tops will be available on Thursday 21st and will run from 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm.
#LetGirlsPlay
As you can see, the Year 1 girls were proud to represent Fern Hill at the Kingston Schools Football Festival on Thursday this week. They played 4 games in their pool, winning 3 and drawing 1. They managed an impressive 15 goals, conceding only 5, and showed some great skills - definitely some girls to watch out for in the future.
And this was in the week that Girls Football was celebrated at Fern Hill as part of the FA #LetGirlsPlay initiative - the football rota was given over to the girls. In the words of one staff member, "The girls had a ball!"

Bounce4Books - a big “Thank You”!
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated to Bounce4Books. We have been overwhelmed with the response and so far raised just over £2,800 which will buy lots of amazing new books for our school! There is still time donate via the PSA's JustGiving page until Sunday 13th March. It would be fabulous to break the £3,000 mark!
Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea - Friday 25th March
Tickets will soon be available for our Mother's Day afternoon tea, which will be held on Friday 25th March from 2:15 pm in the Large Hall. This will be a chance for our mums to relax and catch up with each other whilst the dads serve tea and cakes and our children are in school! Raffle tickets will also be sold on the day for a chance to win a hamper packed with goodies.
This event will be free of charge, although due to capacity limits in the Hall everyone who attends must book a ticket in advance. Further information and a link to book tickets coming soon...
