The Queen's Platinum Jubilee
On Thursday 26th May, we will celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in school, to mark her 70 years of service to the nation and Commonwealth. As part of the celebrations, each year group has been given a decade to study. During the week, the children will investigate key events from their decade and explore the diversity of the nation and Commonwealth by learning more about the artists, musicians, fashion and design that influenced the time. The children may come to school wearing clothes that were worn during their decade - and we would love them to represent their own heritage in their choice of clothes.
Nursery & Reception: 2010-2019 (dress up theme of Kings & Queens)
Year 1: 2000-2009 Year 2: 1990-1999
Year 3: 1980-1989 Year 4: 1970-1979
Year 5: 1960-1969 Year 6: 1950-1959
We will be holding our own Big Jubilee Lunch on the day as a whole school picnic outside. The children should bring a party packed lunch and Vicky and her team in the kitchen will be providing pizza and ‘jubilee’ brownies too. Children in Years 3, 4 and 6 will have their picnic on the astro turf so may like to bring in a picnic blanket or cushion to sit on. Year 5 are lucky enough to be visiting Hampton Court Palace on Thursday 26th May so they will have their Big Jubilee Lunch on Wednesday 25th May instead - followed by an extended playtime!

The Queen’s Green Canopy Commemorative Fern Garden & Plaque Competition
At Fern Hill, we will be taking part in the Woodland Trust’s The Queen’s Green Canopy – a tree planting initiative created to mark the Platinum Jubilee with a network of individual trees, avenues, copses and whole woodlands in honour of The Queen's service and the legacy she has built. This will create a green legacy of its own, with every tree planted bringing benefits for people, wildlife and climate, now and for the future.
Each class will plant a fern tree or plant in our new ‘Fern Garden’. The children who are awarded a Headteacher’s certificate at the end of this half-term will plant their fern on behalf of their class on Wednesday 25th May. Our Queen’s Canopy Fern Garden will be officially opened during the Big Jubilee Lunch the next day.
All the children will have the opportunity to design a commemorative plaque to celebrate the Queen’s Canopy Fern Garden. The winning designs will be turned into a piece of art created in an art workshop in collaboration with GCSE art students from The Kingston Academy and permanently displayed in the Fern Garden.
We are really looking forward to welcoming all our families to Fern Hill’s Sports Day on Friday 20th May when our whole community can come together once again to celebrate the children’s achievements. This year we will be holding Sports Day at a new venue – the YMCA Hawker Centre on Richmond Road.
The format of the day will remain the same with Reception, Year 1 and 2 competing in the morning and Years 3 to 6 in the afternoon. Families are invited to watch of course and join us in a whole school picnic lunch. Nursery will have their own special Sports Day after the half-term break. Look out for a letter will all the details coming home next week.
