Reminders
Last day of term
Friday 31st March is the last day of the spring term. It is a mufti day and the children may wear their own clothes to school - but no football kits please! School closes early that day, and we are staggering dismissal to ensure the children can be collected promptly.
Reception, Year 1 & 2 - 1:25 pm Nursery and Years 3 - 6 - 1:30 pm
Parent helpers
If you are a regular helper in the classroom, please check with your class teacher to confirm if you are needed in school next week - timetables tend to change in the last week of term. Thank you for your continuing support – it is greatly appreciated by all staff and the children you work with.
School lunches
School lunches for next term are now available to order through ParentPay. The deadline for ordering for the first week back after the Easter break is 9th April.
We are looking forward to seeing you next week for Parents' Evening. Please enter school through main reception and head to your child's classroom where you will be able to look at their classwork books before you meet the teacher.
Safety on the school site
Please may we ask you once again to NOT use the car park as a pedestrian walk through. Please remind your child to be safe - approach the school site from the Richmond Road main entrance and only use the footpath along the side of the school to walk to and from the KS2 playground. May we also remind you that there is strictly no parking or drop off/collection facility in the car park for families unless agreed in advance with the school office.
Red Nose Day
Thank you so much for your support of Comic Relief last week. Through cash donations on the day, our JustGiving page and the PSA's cake sale, we raised a grand total of £769.24 which is a fantastic achievement!
Inclusion Coffee Morning
We are delighted to announce the return of our Inclusion Coffee Mornings. These events are hosted by our Inclusion team and are an excellent opportunity for you to meet with them and learn more about the provision and support we have in place at Fern Hill for children with educational and other needs, from both internal and external professionals.
Our first Coffee Morning will be held on Monday 24th April from 9:00 – 10:30 am. The Mental Health Support team will be joining us to run a session called ‘Helping your child with worries’. There will be time for networking with other parents, general discussion and Q&A with the team.
All parents and carers are welcome. To help us with planning, please let us know if you will join us by completing this short form. We hope to see you there and if you have any questions, please contact the Inclusion team directly at: inclusion@fernhillprimary.org
Don't miss the deadline for submitting your child's work for the Royal Academy of Arts Young Artists’ Summer Show! We've had some really lovely entries so far - thank you for supporting your child to take part. If your child would like to submit an artwork, just follow this link and select Fern Hill Primary as your school. Registration and submission is open until Wednesday 29th March 2023.
This week and next, we’re taking part in Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel 2023 - the UK’s largest inter school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge. The challenge runs until the end of term and we would love our whole community to be involved. Please encourage your child(ren) to cycle, walk, wheel or scoot to school as many days as possible next week. Teachers will make a note of how they travelled each day and there are some fantastic prizes to be won if enough of our children take part and make active journeys to school.
This competition is a great way to build physical activity in children’s daily routine which is important for their physical health and mental wellbeing. Making active journeys to school also helps to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution outside the school gate. A YouGov study showed nearly half of UK children worry about air pollution near their school - and that children thought active travel was the best away to bring down these pollution levels.
If you are looking for some advice to help you have a hassle-free journey to school, Sustrans has developed a handy free guide to walking, cycling or scooting to school.
Next term's extracurricular lunchtime and after school clubs for children in Years 1 through to 6 are now available to book. The club timetable and information on how to book is published on our website. For school run clubs, payment must be made through ParentPay. For clubs run by external providers, bookings should be made directly with the providers and not school. Click here for their contact details.
Most clubs have now finished for the term however the following catch-up sessions are running next week: Monday 27th March - Start to Sing at 3:30 pm; Wednesday 29th March - Choir at 3:30 pm; Thursday 30th March - Keyboard at lunchtime; Friday 31st March - Athletics & Pottery at 1:30 pm.
Book of the Week
'The Underpants of Chaos' by Sam Copeland & Jenny Pearson
Spark! School Book Awards 7+ Shortlist
When something weird starts to happen at their school, Agatha and Lenny team up to investigate...
Agatha is already a spy-detective so she is naturally well-placed to figure out what's going on when a mysterious 'shiver' causes all of her classmates to dance wildly and then forget it ever happened.
Lenny has tried a lot of different things, in a lot of different schools, (his mum is sure he'll find his thing eventually) so he's happy to give investigating a try - particularly as he and Agatha seem to be the only ones who notice the shiver and remember its effects afterwards. The shiver continues to cause chaos, from rampaging gargoyles to vicious underpants, but can Agatha and Lenny work out who is behind it all before their whole school is destroyed?
A lively and laugh-out-loud hilarious story from two very funny authors.
~ Mrs Rouillard, School Librarian
