Reminders
Class photographs
Next week, you will receive a link and password to view and order your child's class photograph. Please note that the password will be unique to your class and must not be shared with anyone outside your class for data protection reasons. Delivery of your order will be directly to school, before the end of term.
Illness
If your child is unwell and will be absent from school, please inform us by 8:30 am on each day of absence. You can email the school office at: office@fernhillprimary.org or call 020 8247 0300. If the office is busy, you may be put through to the answerphone. Please do leave a message.
Don't forget the home learning activities for this half-term that are due by Friday 12th July for the Home Learning Showcase. Your child's Home Learning Grid and any supporting resources are published on their Home Learning Google Classroom.
Thank you to all the families who took the time to complete the Parent & Carer survey over the half-term break. We will share the outcomes and action plan with you in due course. Please look out for the Parent Council survey that will be sent out on Monday. It's all about the sport and exercise provision at Fern Hill, and we would love to hear your thoughts on Sports Day too.
Surbiton Hockey Club are offering free term time after-school hockey sessions every Thursday afternoon from 4:30 - 5:30 pm. Beginners are very welcome, and the sessions are designed for children who have limited opportunities to play at school or at clubs. Find out more here.
Well done to all the children taking part in their Sports Day today. There was great sportsmanship and a sense of fun on the field. Thank you to the families who could join us too - it was lovely to see so many of you there. Do check your child's Google Classroom, where the teachers will be posting photos of all the action!
Eco-Committee Update
Our Committee are really looking forward to joining a special assembly at Rokeby School next week, to find out more about The Coastline Runner. Luke Douglas-Home is on a mission to run the English coast, collecting as much shoreline plastic along the way as he can. So far, Luke has run 770 km from Southwold to Glasgow, covering ten counties and collected over 700 Kg of plastic during his run, preventing it from going to our seas and polluting our environment. You can find out more about this initiative here.
The Committee would like to ask for lots more families to join in the 'mini-beast log pile challenge' they set us for over the half-term break. The children have been thinking about their biodiversity topic and created this video. Please send in a picture of your log pile!
Finally, we would like to say a big hello to our newest wildlife residents...you can watch them here.
Book of the Week
‘Fledgling’ by Lucy Hope‘
‘Wild Song’ is the sequel to Candy’s previous novel, ‘Bone Talk’, but it can be read as a standalone story. Set in the Philippines in 1904, Luki wants to be a hunter, but the elders in her village expect her to settle down and get married like the other girls. So when she hears about the St Louis World’s Fair, she signs up to join the Igorot contingent and travel to America. At first, it is an exciting adventure, but soon Luki realises that she is expected to perform to the expectations of the Americans, who only see the Igorot as ignorant savages.
I’d highly recommend this to upper KS2 pupils - a fascinating book about a little-known part of history.
Lucy Hope Author Visit
On Wednesday, the Year 6 Book Club and Reading Champions had the opportunity to visit TKA for an author visit from Lucy Hope - the Carnegie-nominated author of 'Fledgling' and 'Wren'. Lucy spoke about how her childhood home, an atmospheric castle in Wales, became the inspiration behind her gothic novels, and we had a go at writing our own gothic fiction. Thank you to TKA KS3 Book Club for being gracious hosts!
