Reminders
School lunches
If your child is having a school lunch, please don’t forget to place an order through ParentPay by 8:00 am on the day. To avoid missing the deadline, we recommend that you order your child’s lunches for the full half-term in advance - you can cancel or amend those orders at any time up until 8:00 am on the day if anything changes.
Year group weekly news
Don't forget to check the year group weekly news published every Friday afternoon on your child's Google Home Learning Classroom. You should sign in using your child's school Google Account - if you don't have their login, please check in their reading diary first before contacting the school office.
Home Learning Grids for this half-term are posted on your child's Google Home Learning Classroom. Work should be completed in time for our Home Learning Showcase on Friday 18th October.
The School Health Team will be visiting us on Thursday 7th November to offer the flu immunisation to children in Reception to Year 6. The immunisation is available as a nasal spray or an injectable porcine free vaccine. You will need to provide your consent if you would like your child to have it, and we'll be sending home more information next week.
Poetry By Heart Competition
This year, to celebrate National Poetry Day and Oracy October, we are launching our 'Poetry by Heart' competition. Poetry by Heart is a national poetry speaking competition that aims to support children in building confidence with poetry alongside developing their oracy and performance skills.
We hope that many of the children will choose to take part, inspired by our visit from Kate Wakeling, and National Poetry Day, this week.
To take part, children should learn a poem by heart and practise performing it at home. They will then perform their poetry for each other in their year groups before shortlisting for the Fern Hill Poetry Slam! By the end of the competition, we will have chosen one pupil to represent Fern Hill in the regional Poetry by Heart finals - a very exciting prospect! Although the national competition is for children in Year 3 and above, we would love the younger children to get involved too by learning a poem and sharing it with their teacher. They will also have an opportunity to take part in the Poetry Slam at school.
Pupils must choose a poem from this linked 7 plus anthology.
There are many poems to choose from, so we have shortlisted some of our favourites:
Longer length
The Eggshell by Rudyard Kipling
The Land Where The Taffy Birds Grow by Margaret McBride Hoss
Cat-Rap by Grace Nichols
There Was An Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly (Anonymous)
Medium length
What The Fly Thinks by Gertrude Heath
Comet by Kate Wakeling
Fisherman Chant by John Agard
Roger the Dog by Ted Hughes
Popping Corn Song (Anonymous)
Shorter length
Mary Had a Little Lamb
The Little Turtle by Vachel Lindsay
Bats by Mary Effie Lee Newsom
Snail by Langston Hughers
Children in Years 1 & 2 might like to choose their poem from this list:
For Reception children, the focus is on nursery rhymes, which they can share with their teacher if they would like to learn one at home: Mary had a Little Lamb, Humpty Dumpty, Hickory Dickory Dock, I'm a Little Teapot, Little Miss Muffet.

Kate Wakeling Visit for National Poetry Day
This week we celebrated National Poetry Day! To help us celebrate, we had a visit from the brilliant Kate Wakeling, fresh from winning the Week Junior Book Award for the Children's Poetry Book of the Year. Kate presented an assembly for both KS1 and KS2 and then shared some individual class workshops with Year 2 and Year 6. We made weird cake, learnt about super-speedy comets and pondered the provenance of a drop of water. Thanks to Kate for an entertaining and inspiring day!
Parent Trust Associate Vacancy
Last week, we sent you a letter inviting nominations for the role of Parent Trust Associate to join the school's local governing body, the Fern Hill Local Academy Committee. You can read the letter here. The role of Parent Trust Associates is to bring the perspective of parents to discussions and decision-making, but not to represent or speak on behalf of the parent body. The Trust is committed to inclusion and recognises that every governing board and its committees will benefit from having a balance and diversity of knowledge, background, gender, age, ethnicity, skills and experience.
If you would like to apply, please complete the nomination form linked in the letter by Monday 7th October. Your application should include a short personal statement outlining why you are interested in the role, the skills and any experience you are able to bring, and the commitment and contribution you feel you could make.
Parents' Evening
Parents’ Evening will be held on Tuesday 22nd October from 4:00–7:00 pm and Wednesday 23rd October from 1:30–5:30 pm. School will close for children in Reception through to Year 6 at 1:00 pm on Wednesday 23rd October. Nursery will run as normal until 3:25 pm. You will be able to book a 10-minute in-person appointment with your class teacher through our Parents’ Evening System; a link to the Parents’ Evening System will be sent to you next week.
Consent for Local Visits
Please remember to complete the consent form to give permission for your child to take part in local visits out of school this academic year. If you have more than one child at Fern Hill, you should complete a separate consent form for each.
