YEAR 5 BIKEABILITY 9th - 13th July 2018 Just a reminder for those taking part in Bikeability next week. Remember to bring your bike and helmet every day and lock it up at the racks outside school. Don’t forget the key to your lock if you have one! You will be outside most of the time, so dress appropriately – sunscreen and water will be essential if this hot weather continues!
Please make sure the on-line register has been completed which gives parental consent. Details were sent out in the letter that went home.
The course runs every day for two hours and you need to come down to the office promptly for 10.00am. Hope you enjoy the course - happy cycling!
This week saw some of our Year 5 children participating in Bikeability training. The instructors commented on how impressed they were with the children, who displayed great resilience in the heat. They said the children were enthusiastic, polite and concentrated really well in spite of the high temperatures, so well done to all children who took part. Let's see if the children on the course next week can do as well!
Nursery Summer Concert
Daisy AM and PM performed their summer concert this week and they did an AMAZING job! They sang their songs beautifully and with so much confidence. We were all so proud of them! The children also loved sharing the fruit kebabs they had made with their parents.
Well done Daisies!

Country Dancing
Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic morning at The Kingston Country Dance Festival on Tuesday. Over 1000 primary school children took part this year and all performed a variety of country dances at the same time! The children particularly enjoyed performing The Swan and Haste to the Wedding as they were able to demonstrate how to promenade, swing and do-si-do in time with the music. A huge thank you to all the parents who helped us and to Mrs Cranefield who made over 90 sashes!
Bocketts Farm
The children had a brilliant time on our Year 2 trip to Bocketts Farm this week. They enjoyed a fun- packed day which was full of lots of activities including pig racing, animal feeding and handling and a tractor ride. They also learnt lots of facts about the various farm animals and the daily running of the farm. The children behaved impeccably throughout the day and luckily the weather was slightly cooler than it has been.

Donald Trunk Children's Story Telling Workshop
This week Years 1,2 & 3 performed in costume bits from Donald Trunk, Sri Lanka's Swimming elephant, followed by an action packed class on how to write your own children's book with prizes for the two best ideas pitched from each class. Giving the children a wonderful insight into how writing can be turned into an amazing career travelling the world. The children's book Donald Trunk is inspired from a series of news events covered in 2017, when Sri Lanka’s swimming elephants hit international headlines when not one but several elephants were brought back by the Navy from swimming about 10 to 15 miles out to sea. Inspired by this phenomenon, author Juliet Coombe decided to write about the amazing adventures of Trunk, a mischievous elephant with grandiose dreams of escaping to the Nicobar Islands, the real paradise, or so he thinks. The story is full of lessons from an array of wonderful characters of all shapes and sizes – a wise butterfly like Jiminy Cricket, a scary matriarch of the elephant herd, an Eden-like sly cobra, a singing mermaid who makes jokes, the unique Nicobar pigeon, and even a blue whale who thinks Donald is a grey moving rock – all within the context of Sri Lanka with its incredible festivals of colour and beauty, its sense of community and magical traditions.
Book costs £7.99 and if you are interested in ordering a copy drop Juliet Coombe an email over the weekend to place your order so you can pick up a signed copy on Monday outside Key Stage 1, where it will be on sale from 3.00pm to 4.30pm on Monday 9th July. Two pounds from every book sold is being given to the school to support other exciting events.

PSA Meeting, Wednesday 11th July
The final PSA meeting of the year is on Wednesday 11th July, at 7.30 pm in the Small Hall. PSA meetings are open to all parents and carers; everyone is very welcome. You don’t need to have had, or commit to, an active role to come along and it’s a great opportunity to find out more about how the PSA is run and what events are being planned. It would be lovely to see new faces and hear your views. The agenda for this meeting will cover how much we have raised and spent this year and how the PSA will be structured next year. If you would like to get involved in September, perhaps even join the Committee, please do either come along to the meeting or email us at fernhillpsa@gmail.com. Further information on Committee roles & responsibilities is posted on the PSA pages of the school website here. Roles can be shared and you really don’t need any prior experience! An alternative to taking a role on the Committee is to be a Class Rep – please get in touch with your current Class Rep to find out more about this.
Hedge Fund
Well what a week! We are so excited to tell you that the thermometer in reception is now reading at 75%. That is an amazing amount raised so far for the Hedge Fund. The money raised has come in so many different ways. Beth in year 2 donated £5.26 raised by helping to clean the house!, Nina in year 6 held a sale outside her house and sold bric a brac, she helped raise £15.00. Thank you to each and everyone who are doing all they can to raise money for the hedge.
Medicines in School
Please remember to collect your child's medicine from the school office before the end of term. Long term medicines kept in school should be checked for end of date and returned in the autumn term.
Thank you.
