Reminders
Watches
Please may we ask for your support to ensure that your child does not wear a smart watch or fitness tracker to school. They are valuable items which may get lost and also distract the children from learning in the classroom. Children in Year 3 and above may wear a sensible, analogue watch.
After School Clubs
If you would like your child to join a new club this term, please contact us first to check that a place is available. Children must be registered for a club before they can attend for health and safety reasons. You can email us on: clubs@fernhill.rbksch.org

Kingston Music Service
If your child has music tuition with a Kingston Music Service tutor during the school day, please remember to inform your tutor directly, via the practice notebook or email, if your child is going to miss a lesson due to a school trip.
School Uniform
Our school uniform suppliers, PMG Schoolwear, have moved from their Tolworth Broadway site and can now be found at 393-395 Hook Road, Chessington, Surrey, KT9 1EL.
Their telephone number has stayed the same and is 0208 786 2211 but their email address has changed to chessington@pmgretail.co.uk
Forest School at Fern Hill
This week saw the start of Forest School at Fern Hill as Reception children ventured outside for their first outdoor learning classes which we've called Forest Fun. We are extremely lucky to have the perfect environment for forest schooling at Fern Hill with the Discovery Zone hut and pond and Secret Garden, part of which has now been fenced off with gated access to create a safe and secure outdoor classroom space. The children’s session started with a chat on fire safety - they sat in a circle and imagined how they might get to the other side of the circle if there really was a roaring campfire in the middle! After free play in the mud kitchen and a spot of litter picking, the children made bird feeders. They had two different styles of bird feeders to choose from, one made using pine cones, butter and bird seed and the other created by wire, cheese, apples, cheerios and raisins. We've created a photo gallery on the website for Forest Fun - please have a look!
We are still on the look-out for volunteers to help run these classes. Over the course of this year, we hope to give all year groups the opportunity to enjoy outdoor learning and would also like to offer an after school club. The more helpers we have, the more classes we can run and the more forest school inspired activities we can offer the children. If you are ready to spend time outdoors, in all weathers, please get in touch with Miss Evans, Poppy class teacher, via the school office.
Arts Week
From comic strip cartoons and self-portraits inspired by pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, to a whole year ‘tribe of kids’ based on the work of illustrator Lane Smith, the children have been producing some fabulous artwork this week. Following the theme of ‘Stories and Illustrators’ each year group have spent Arts Week exploring the work of their chosen artist or illustrator and experimenting with different artistic styles and media including clay, felt and photography.
The children’s work will be on display around the school and you are warmly invited to come into school for the Arts Week Exhibition on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th February from 3.30 pm. Have a look at the Arts Week gallery on our website here for a taster of some of the amazing pieces you will see.
Tree Tops News
If you are paying for your child's Tree Tops sessions using childcare vouchers, please ensure that you tell us the full amount you have transferred and the sessions you would like us to credit your payment to: breakfast club, early half session (3.15-4.30 pm), late half session (4.30-6.00 pm) or full session (3.15-6.00 pm). Please email treetops@fernhill.rbksch.org with this information.
Don't forget that if you are paying with childcare vouchers, you must still book the sessions using ParentPay. Receipt of your payment does not automatically secure a booking for your child. All bookings must be made 3 days in advance of the session required. You can find out more about Tree Tops and how to book a session on our website here.
A Day at the Museum
Yesterday, Year 3 had a fascinating visit to the Natural History Museum, where they took part in a workshop investigating the formation of fossils and the work of palaeontologists in identifying them.
They were able to handle rocks and fossils including four million year old megaldon teeth, as well as uncovering and classifying a dinosaur’s skull!
More adventures were to be had in the Earth Galleries, where they explored the exhibits around volcanoes, earthquakes and the Earth’s treasures.

PSA News & Events
Cinema Night on Friday 8th February
Thank you to all those who bought tickets for the KS2 Cinema Night. We’re sure it’s going to be a great evening for the children! You will have received two sticky labels with each ticket. Parents should fill both labels in with their child’s name plus the parent’s mobile number. Children will need to bring their ticket plus both completed labels with them on the night. To cut down on unnecessary plastic use, we’d also ask children to bring their own refillable drinks bottle. Tickets will be exchanged for a hotdog (meat or vegetarian) and a drink. Additional drinks, popcorn and sweets will be available for purchase.
Event timings for Cinema Night on Friday 8th February
5.25pm Doors open
5.45pm Doors close
6.00pm Film starts
7.45pm Pick up
Please be aware that a responsible adult will need to bring your child, sign them in and collect them from the school hall. Any child arriving without a parent/carer/adult responsible for signing them in will necessitate a phone call for permission. If anyone other than the parent will be collecting, this will need to be communicated as children arrive. Please bear with us while we check the children in and out – it is for their safety and security.
Children will be supervised throughout the event by parent helpers and there will be teachers on hand as well. We do need more parent helpers for this event. If you would like to volunteer, please email fernhillpsa@gmail.com
We appreciate that some of the older children may want to bring their mobile phones. However, we strongly recommend that they leave them at home – any phone seen being used during the film will be looked after until the child is collected.
