Tuesday is Safer Internet Day!
Safer Internet Day will be celebrated in over one hundred countries next week with the theme ‘Together for a better Internet’. Co-ordinated by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the day is all about promoting the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people. Last year’s Safer Internet Day was the biggest ever with over one thousand schools and organisations across the UK inspiring a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.
During their Computing lessons next week, Fern Hill children will focus on how consent works in an online context and explore how they ask, give, and receive consent online.
Everyone has their part to play in making the Internet a better, safer place and the UK Safer Internet Centre website offers a range of resources for parents and carers to download including top tips, conversation starters and fun activities to do with your child and a family internet safety plan.
Sports News - the January Round Up...
It’s been a busy start to the term for sporting fixtures at Fern Hill - and there's lots more to come.
The Year 6 girls’ football team just keep on winning - this time in the District Cup against St Luke's with a 6-2 victory. Playing Our Lady Immaculate School next week, a win will take them to the semi-finals. Well done girls, and keep it up - don't forget it's all good practice for the London Youth Games in March.
Year 4 girls had their turn playing in a football festival. On a VERY cold, and snowy, afternoon, they braved the elements to play against other schools at Chessington School. Huge smiles, despite the biting wind, and some great team spirit shown by all.
Year 3 boys took part in a rugby festival - playing the game with the other shaped ball (my favourite!). Despite limited practice time, they showed huge potential, winning half of their games and earning a place in the next round. Up against some tough opposition, sadly, victory was not to be. However, again, smiles, team spirit, and a liberal helping of mud - sorry, parents, for providing the white kit for this event! - meant that they really enjoyed the occasion.
And there's more to come this term with Year 5 boys’ football, Year 2 football, High5 Netball before half term, and Hockey, football and more rugby (yay!) to come before the Easter break.
A big thank you to all the parents and staff for supporting the many events we try to participate in - it absolutely wouldn't be possible without you. If you are DBS checked, and your child is in an event, please let me know if you can lend a hand; it would be a great help.

Year 5 explore Buddhism
On Thursday, Year 5 visited the Buddhapadipa Temple, a Buddhist monastery covering four acres in Wimbledon. Wat (temple) Buddhapadipa was built in 1976, the first Buddhist temple built in the UK, and is surrounded by an ornamental lake, a small grove, flower garden and an orchard. The Uposatha or Shrine Hall of the temple is a holy place and the children had the opportunity to see the typical Thai mural paintings on the interior walls depicting the Buddha's lifetime
"On our trip, we went to the Buddhist Temple in Wimbledon. From the moment we saw it, we thought it was a very beautiful place and we learnt many things about Buddhism. We learnt how they prayed and what the different statues represented. We were sprayed with holy water too. The gardens had magnificent statues and things like a pond and animals that we drew as well as the building. The paintings inside had an interesting story too."

Cinema Night on Friday 8th February
Tickets have sold really well for our KS2 Cinema Night on Friday 8th February and we have been really pleased to have so many offers of help from parents. Children who are attending should bring their ticket, their completed labels and a drink bottle to the event. Detailed information about the hotdogs, sweets and popcorn is attached to this newsletter.
Doors open at 5.25pm and collection is at 7.45pm.
Please be aware that a responsible adult will need to bring your child, sign them in and collect them from the school hall. Any child arriving without a parent/carer/adult responsible for signing them in will necessitate a phone call for permission. If anyone other than the parent will be collecting, this will need to be communicated as children arrive. Please bear with us while we check the children in and out – it is for their safety and security.
We appreciate that some of the older children may want to bring their mobile phones. However, we strongly recommend that they leave them at home – any phone seen being used during the film will be looked after until the child is collected.
