Curriculum Evening
Please save the date for our 2019 Curriculum Evening which will be held on Tuesday 2nd April at 6.45 pm. Last year’s evening was a great success with very positive feedback from the parents who attended. Further details will be sent to you after the half term break. If you’d like to know more about the Curriculum Evening held last year, please click here.
We have created a new page on the school website to post information about local events and activities that may be of interest to Fern Hill families. If you would like an item included on this page, please email the school office at office@fernhill.rbksch.org with details. You can find the Community page in the main menu of the website here.
This week, we are proud to have been supporting Place2Be’s Children’s Mental Health Week 2019, as part of our journey to becoming a Rights Respecting School.
The children have explored the theme of ‘Healthy: Inside and Out’ and thought about how to look after their bodies and their minds. When we think about healthy living, we tend to focus on looking after our bodies – our physical wellbeing – through food, being active and getting enough sleep. However, in order to be healthy overall, it’s important that we look after our minds – our mental wellbeing – too. Our bodies and minds are actually very closely linked, so things that we do to improve our physical wellbeing can help our mental wellbeing as well.
Mr Waiting held a whole school assembly on Monday, introducing the theme of ‘Healthy: Inside and Out’ and reminded the children about sharing any worries they have with their ‘trusted adults’ and a friend. Our Rights Respecting School Ambassadors have been thinking about the barriers children sometimes feel when talking to adults and ways we can all work together to make it easier and more comfortable to have difficult conversations with a grown up. Plenty has gone on in classrooms too: sharing videos from Place2Be, the Children’s Mental Health Week campaigners, enjoying a spot of yoga and practising mindfulness by creating a Grumpy Jar!
The Place2Be website is an excellent source of information on how to support your child’s health with top tips for both parents and children. You may even like to have a go at creating a Grumpy Jar at home, a perfect mindfulness activity designed to help children manage their emotions. Have a look at this video clip for more information. There’s an activities sheet attached below too.
Sports Round Up
The busy sporting weeks just keep on coming - Year 5 and Year 2 in action this week.
The Year 5 boys’ football team competed in a qualifying round to see who would go through to the Kingston v Richmond finals in April. Six matches, ending in a tough battle with Green Lane Primary, took place at a very cold Chessington School. With 3 victories and 3 draws, Fern Hill boys came second in the round, and have joined the Year 5 girls representing Kingston at the finals. Well done, boys, you played brilliantly, with some amazing teamwork to get the results you deserved. Good luck in April.
Not to be outdone by the older children, some of the Year 2s went to Surbiton High Playing Ground to participate in a mixed football festival. A little damp underfoot and again very cold, but the children had a great afternoon. Playing 6 games in 2 rounds of the festival, the footballers scored a few goals and saved a few as well! Well done to all of you.
Next week sees the Year 6 netball team in action at the High5 tournament. Good luck, and I look forward to sharing their results as soon as possible (hopefully in next week's newsletter if we get back in time).
- Mrs Lawn, Year 6 class teacher and PE lead
And finally, a plea to all parents and carers!
Please return any outstanding sports team kit to Mrs Lawn (or your class teacher) by Tuesday 12th February, so that it can be made ready for the next half term's sports events.
For the sporting events that return to school later than normal pick up time, we would be very grateful if you are at school to meet your child by the expected return time. Staff will always wait for the last child to be picked up but the school does close at 6.00 pm when the Premises team lock the site. There have been a number of occasions when children have been collected past 6.00 pm which means a late night for both the teaching staff and Mr Morrow. Thank you.
Year 5 and the Ancient Greeks
"Yesterday, Year 5 were lucky enough to go on another trip, this time to the British Museum. It was a really enjoyable experience as we learnt a lot about the history of the Ancient Greeks. We saw a variety of different artefacts like carved statues, pots and stone carvings. One of the most interesting things we saw was the Erechtheum, which we found out was the most important religious building in Greece. We also saw all ninety-two metopes of the Parthenon - square plaques of marble that were carved in high relief with scenes from Greek mythology."
- by Eloisa, Belle and Jamie, Year 5
