Reminders
Tree Tops
Please remember that all Tree Tops sessions must be booked in advance. This term we have had a number of children arriving at Tree Tops after school who have not been booked on, impacting staff to pupil ratios. If you have missed the 3 day cut off period for booking on ParentPay, please contact us by email at treetops@fernhill.rbksch.org or by telephone on 0208 247 0300 to see if there is space for your child. Thank you for your understanding.
Pathway Closure
We have been informed by The Kingston Academy that the pathway next to their site which runs between Richmond Road and Wolsey Drive will be closed from Monday 4 March for at least 7 weeks. This is due to their on-going building works. If you have any questions about the pathway closure or would like further information, please contact The Kingston Academy directly on 020 8465 6200.

Photographic Consent
There are still a significant number of children without a photographic Consent form on file. Please be aware that if a Consent form is not returned for your child by Friday 8th March, we will assume that you do not give us your permission to photograph or make any recording of your child for any purpose. This will mean that images of your child will not be used in classroom or corridor displays or included in presentations used in assemblies, e.g. Celebration Assembly. You can download a Photographic Consent form directly from our website here. Once completed, signed and dated, please return it to your class teacher or the school office.
Governing Body News
A warm welcome to Dean Morley and Marcus Stanton who have been appointed to the Governing Body as co-opted Governors. You can read Dean and Marcus' biographies on the Governor pages of the website here.
After School Club Notices
Tag Rugby on Tuesday 12th March has been cancelled. There will be a catch up session on Tuesday 2nd April.
We'll be marking Red Nose Day at Fern Hill with a mufti day. Children are invited to come to school wearing red but no football kits please!
Year 6 children will be at the playground gates on the morning of Friday 15th March to collect any donations you would like to make to the charity Comic Relief, which supports vulnerable people and communities in the UK and internationally.
World Book Day
On Thursday 7th March we’ll be celebrating World Book Day and children and staff are invited to come to school dressed up as their favourite book character. If you are stuck for dressing up ideas, have a look at the World Book Day website. Book Aid International’s website has a fantastic collection of dress up guides too, including how-to videos and quick to make costumes. We are really excited to see lots of different book characters come to life around the school on Thursday!
Don’t forget about our World Book Day competition to design a 'Book in a Box'! Using a shoe box, the children can create a model that represents their favourite book, showing the key themes of the story or depicting an event from the story. Children can bring these into their class from Monday 4th March. Judging will take place at school on World Book Day, with prizes available for the winners! Can you guess the books these models represent?
The world's biggest short-story writing competition for children!
Before the half term break we shared information about the BBC Radio 2 500 words story writing competition.
500 Words is open to any child who is aged between 5 and 13 years old on 14th June 2019 and there are two age categories: 5-9 years old and 10-13 years old. The competition celebrates imagination and creativity - not spelling and grammar! - so all children of all abilities are invited to enter.
To enter, children should write an original story, no more than 500 words in length - and submit it online. The story can be about absolutely anything – spaceships, insects, microwaves…the list is as long as your imagination!
You can find out all about the competition on the BBC Radio 2 website. It’s packed full of helpful hints and tips to get you started. You can download a learning pack from the Learn section where you’ll also find some great guides in creative writing including an interactive programme to help you start your story. Have a look at this word palette too for extra inspiration!
Click here to submit your story. Don’t miss the deadline for entries at 7pm on Friday 8th March 2019.

Consultations for children in Nursery through to Year 5 should be booked online at: https://fernhillprimary.parentseveningsystem.co.uk
Bookings will close at 12.00 pm on Friday 8th March.
You will be able to book a ten minute consultation with your child's class teacher during the following times:
Wednesday 20th March - 4.00 pm – 7.00 pm
Thursday 21st March - 2.30 pm – 6.00 pm
There is an extra consultation date available for Nursery children only, on Monday 18th March from 9.00 am – 2.30 pm.
Please note that school closes at 2.00 pm on Thursday 21st March.
After school clubs will run from 2.00 - 3.00 pm and Tree Tops will open from 2.00 - 6.00 pm.
Please be aware that there will be limited capacity in Tree Tops on this day and sessions must be booked in advance. If your child attends a club on Thursdays and is already booked onto the Tree Tops late afternoon session at 4.30 pm, they will automatically be registered to attend from 3.00 pm when their club end. There will be no charge for this extended session.
Year 6 visit to the Houses of Parliament
"On Wednesday, we went to the Houses of Parliament for our topic, Crime and Punishment. First, our guides, Tania and Damien, took us on a tour around the Parliament and we learnt all about it's history. We then were taken to see a debate in the House of Commons, which was about Brexit, and we got to see Jeremy Corbyn! We all really enjoyed the trip and wish we could go again!"
