Fundraising Update
"Dear Fern Hill,
Thank you so much to everyone for making ‘odd sock day’ in aid of World Down Syndrome Day such a huge success. We raised an amazing £356.47! This will go straight to 21 & Co and will be put to good use. Many thanks everyone."
- from Hannah, Elder class
Thanks to your amazing generosity, donations for Red Nose Day kept coming in last week and we are delighted to announce the final amount we have raised for Comic Relief is £348.47. Thank you!
Mathletics Winners!
We are extremely proud of all the children for the effort they put into Mathletics last week, spurred on by the competition to win maths games for their classes. The sheer volume of work they completed, in school and at home, is awe inspiring! Mr Scott announced the winners of the competition during assembly on Monday. Well done to the following classes who finished with the most points in their year group.
Year 1 Lavender – 19,590 points
Year 2 Heather – 59,633 points
Year 3 Rowan – 57,054 points
Year 4 Larch – 44,011 points
Year 5 Lime – 48,291 points
Year 6 Elder – 45,159 points
Congratulations to Heather, Rowan and Lime classes, who were top of their phase groups and awarded the prizes!
After School Club Notices
Next week is the last week for after school and lunchtime clubs this term. Please don't forget that Start To Sing on Monday 25th March and Dance/Zumba on Wednesday 27th March are cancelled.
The following catch up sessions will run week commencing 1st April:
Monday 1st April – Start to Sing
Tuesday 2nd April – Choir & Tag Rugby
Wednesday 3rd April – Junior Football, Dance/Zumba & Hockey
Friday 5th April – Orchestra, which will run after school closes from 1.30 - 2.30 pm.
Tissues, please!
We have now completely run out of tissues in school! We would be extremely grateful for any spare boxes you may have at home. Please give them to your class teacher or hand them into the school office where they will be used in the first aid area. Thank you.
Sadly, we will be saying goodbye to Miss Woollaston at the end of this term. She will be greatly missed by everyone, especially the children and staff in Nursery and Reception. Good luck Hannah, in your new role at Sacred Heart School in New Malden!
This week the focus has been on respect, and kindness. The children thought about what makes us unique – it’s important to celebrate our differences, and what makes us the same – we are all human. They learnt about World Down Syndrome Day and showed their support for a local charity, 21& Co, by wearing ‘lots of socks’ and heard about The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination which is observed with a series of events and activities worldwide on 21st March each year. This day aims to remind people of racism’s negative consequences and encourages people to remember their obligation and determination to combat it. You can find out more about the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination here.
Fern Hill Curriculum Evening
We are delighted to confirm the final details for this year’s Curriculum Evening which will be held on Tuesday 2nd April 2019. This is an opportunity for parents and carers across all year groups to gain a greater insight into aspects of teaching and learning at Fern Hill. The evening will begin at 6.45 pm with refreshments in the Large Hall, followed by four workshops which will run consecutively and cover a wide range of topics: teaching ‘maths for mastery’, the learning platforms available for you to use at home, encouraging excellence in behaviour, and how we design our curriculum to inspire a love of learning. A summary of the content of each workshop is available on our website here. If you would like to find out more about the Curriculum Evening we ran last year, the workshop presentations are posted on our website here.
To register for the Curriculum Evening, please click on the link below. The closing date for registration is Friday 29th March. Please note that this event is for parents and carers only, not children.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Tree Tops News
Last week, children attending the After School club explored ‘kindness’ and painted their own kindness rocks as part of the Kindness Rocks Project, which encourages people to leave rocks painted with inspiring messages along the path of life. You can find out more at the Kindness Rocks Project website including a book list of inspiring reads about kindness and what it means, for both children and grown-ups.
This week, the children have been exploring Holi, the ancient Hindu Festival of Colours, and creating Rangoli patterns (used by Hindus at Diwali to guide the goddess Lakshmi into their homes) using coloured rice and collage materials. Some of the children shared how they were celebrating Holi, to signal the end of winter and the arrival of spring. You can find out more about the Holi Festival here.
