Fern Hill Music Evening
Fern Hill Music Evening
Calling all our musically talented pupils in Years 3 to 6! The Fern Hill Music Evening, which will be held at school on Tuesday 245th June at 6.00 pm, is a wonderful opportunity for your child to play a piece of music to an audience of Fern Hill families. If your child would like to perform, please complete the reply slip at the bottom of the attached letter and return it to the school office by Monday 3rd June. Don’t forget, the voice is also an instrument and singers are very welcome!
Wellness Week at Fern Hill
We are really looking forward to Wellness Week next week when children and staff will focus on all aspects of a healthy lifestyle including both physical and mental health. The children will be participating in lots of different sporting and relaxation activities, learning about healthy eating and practising their cookery skills and spending plenty of time outdoors. Children should wear sports kit and trainers to school every day and bring a named, refillable water bottle.
Sponsored Run
On Wednesday 22nd May, everyone will be taking part in the whole school Sponsored Run. The money raised will be split between our school and a charity that the children will be choosing. A letter and sponsorship form for this event were sent home today and copies are also attached below. Please encourage your child to find as many sponsors as they can among family and friends so they will be truly inspired to challenge themselves on the run! If you would like to help count laps on the day, please let us know – we are very grateful for any support you can offer. The attached letter gives timings for each year group’s run and includes a reply slip for you to complete and return if you can help.
Sports Day
All the details you need for Sports Day on Friday 24th May are also attached in a letter below, which has been sent home today. Please check the arrangements for your child: children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 should be taken directly to Dinton Field in the morning, not to school, and should arrive between 8.50 am and 9.00 am; children in Years 3 to 6 should come to school as usual in the morning and they will be walked to Dinton Field by their class teachers in time for the whole school picnic lunch at 12.00 pm. All children will need a packed lunch for Sports Day and should wear a t-shirt in their house colour: Richmond is green, Coombe is blue, Hampton is red and Kingston is yellow.
If your child is in Years 3 to 6, it is very important that you complete and return the reply slip at the bottom of the letter to let us know arrangements for your child at the end of Sports Day. Please hand the slip to your class teacher by Tuesday 21st May. Finally, please remember that any bookings for Tree Tops sessions, either for the Breakfast or After School sessions, for Friday 24th May MUST be booked in advance by Monday 20th May.
Lunchtime Learning
To keep the momentum of Wellness Week running throughout the summer term, next week we will be telling the children about a number of new lunchtime clubs available to them after the half term break, run by our own amazing teachers. The clubs are free and will run every day during lunchtime play, offering a wide range of activities including ICT with Mathletics and Busy Things, Cooking around the World, Global Explorers, Mindfulness, Story Time, Yoga and Lego. The children will be able to sign up to one club and will bring a letter home before the half term holiday with further details of the club they have chosen. If a club is oversubscribed, we will pull children’s names out of a hat but all children will have the opportunity to attend a club if they wish too. We hope to continue, and extend, these lunchtime learning clubs for the autumn term.
Well done Year 6!
We’d like to say a huge well done to all the children in Year 6 who took their SATs this week. We are very proud of all their hard work and effort and hope they enjoyed a fantastic day today, ice skating and bowling at the Guildford Spectrum Leisure Centre!
After School Club News
Please note a few important changes to After School and Lunchtime clubs next week.
Cricket, Rugby and Hockey clubs will not be running; there will be catch-up sessions for these at the end of term. Friday 24th May is Sports Day and all the children will be at Dinton Fields over lunchtime for the whole school picnic so French and Infant Gymnastics Lunchtime clubs, usually held on a Friday, are moving to Thursday 23rd May (at the same times). Please don’t forget a packed lunch! On Friday 24th May, all After School clubs are running as usual at 3.30 pm: Karate, Orchestra, Athletics and Pottery clubs.
Half Term Activities
There are a number of exciting activities for all ages taking place at school during the May half term break; please have a look at our holiday activities page on the website here for more information. Pleiades and Mother Nature Science are running a holiday camp every day from Tuesday 27th to Friday 31st May, and Masquerade Theatre Arts have two day performance workshops on Thursday 30th and Friday 31st.
News from the Governing Body
The Governing Body is delighted to announce the appointment of Saphina Sharif (Crocker) to the Board.
Saphina is an ambassador for STEM and Women in Engineering and recently shared her experience with the children during the school’s STEM week. Currently on a career break, Saphina is keen to use her business skills to support the local community and is also on the Committee of the Friends of Latchmere Rec (FoLaR) and the North Kingston Forum.
She has two daughters at Fern Hill and has been a member of the Parent Council since its inception.
We welcome Saphina warmly to the Governing Body and look forward to her contribution to the school. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing Governor, Mark Baldwin, for his dedication and commitment over the past years as he steps down from the role.

Summer Fair – Saturday 15th June
It’s only a month now until our fabulous Summer Fair! We’re still extremely keen to receive more prizes for our raffle draw. Please can you help? Do you, or anyone you know, have good contacts with a local shop, restaurant, organisation or business who might offer a prize? If you do, please contact us at fernhillpsa@gmail.com
We’ll be holding our Tombola Collection on Friday 7th June so please start putting aside any donations. Wine, spirits and other bottled goods, chocolates, children’s toys and games are all welcome, and in return for your donations, it's a mufti (non-uniform day) so children may come to school dressed in their own clothes. Thank you!
Thank you so much to the 89 Fern Hill families who signed up to have a Curchods board to promote our Summer Fair. Your support has helped us raise a wonderful £890!
Sunflower fact of the week!
How are your sunflowers growing after this week’s sunshine? Did you know that when they are young, sunflowers will turn their faces to follow the sun throughout the day? This is called heliotropism. However, once they are fully grown, sunflowers remain static.
PSA Committee Meeting
Thanks to those who came along to Thursday’s PSA committee meeting. It was great to see you there.
Thanks for your support.
Fern Hill PSA.
