Class Photographs
On Monday 10th June and Tuesday 11th June, the school photographer will be taking a class photograph of the children with their classmates and teachers. The children should come into school wearing the correct school uniform, including a school jumper or cardigan and, if they are in Years 3-6, a school tie unless they are wearing a striped summer dress. The photograph will be available to purchase directly from the photographer via a secure website; we will send you further details on how to order online next week along with a password which will be unique to your class.

Computer Club on Wednesday 5th June was cancelled and there will be a catch up session on Wednesday 17th July. Start to Sing Club on Monday 17th June is also cancelled and a catch up session will be run on Thursday 18th July. There will be no French lunchtime club on Friday 5th July, and with only 9 sessions payable this term, there is no catch up session.
Fern Hill Music Evening
Last call for our musically talented pupils in Years 3 to 6! The Fern Hill Music Evening, which will be held at school on Tuesday 245th June at 6.00 pm, is a wonderful opportunity for your child to play a piece of music to an audience of Fern Hill families. If your child would like to perform, and you haven’t already returned the reply slip at the bottom of the attached letter, please do so by Monday 10th June. Don’t forget, the voice is also an instrument and singers are very welcome!
Sensory Needs Seminar
Sensory Needs is one of the Autism Seminars for Families which provides information and advice to parents and carers of children and young people with autism or on the pathway to a diagnosis of autism and is for parents of children aged up to 12. It is running on Monday 1st July at Grand Avenue Primary School in Surbiton. Please see the attached flyer for further information on the content of the seminar and the attached application form for details of how to book.
Well done to our first group of Year 5 children on completing their Bikeability course this week, despite the changeable weather! Our next group start on Monday 17th June; fingers crossed for a week of sunshine.
Our annual Parent & Carer Survey is now available online for families to complete, to give us your views about Fern Hill and your child’s experience here.
You can access the survey by clicking here.
We very much value the feedback of our parent and carer community and to encourage your participation we are offering an incentive: the year group which receives the most survey responses will enjoy their own mufti (non-uniform) day later this term. As of this morning, Year 2 are in the lead but by just one survey response so please support your year group and give us your feedback, if you haven’t already done so. The survey will remain open until Monday 17th June.
The survey is designed to enable you to complete a questionnaire for each of your children attending Fern Hill so if you have more than one child here, please take the opportunity to do a survey for each. More than one parent can also complete a survey for each child.
We will share the results of the survey with you before the end of the school year and progress on the actions plan to address any issues raised during the autumn term.
If you would prefer to complete the survey in writing, rather than online, paper copies are available from the school office.
Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey; we look forward to receiving your feedback.
What a fantastic Sports Day - what a great end to Wellness Week 2019!
A huge thank you to all the families who came to support Sports Day on Friday 24th May. As I am sure you will agree, all of the children showed great resilience, put in amazing effort, and seemed to be having fun on what was a bright, sunny- and not too hot - day.
The usual favourite, the Obstacle Course, saw children crawling, balancing, tunnelling and batting to get their team across the line first...
After all that effort, the children had to wait to come back to school to find out which team had won on the day. And the winners were...
Richmond were the winners in the Infants; Coombe topped the scoreboard for the Juniors. A huge well done to Coombe who finished as the overall school winners.
Blue and green ribbons now adorn the trophies in the cabinet. Congratulations to those in the winning teams, and to everyone who took part - you were brilliant!
World Environment Day on Wednesday 5th June gave us the perfect opportunity to work together as a Rights Respecting school and explore an aspect of Article 29 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: ‘My education should teach me how to respect the environment’.
World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Since it began in 1974 and is now widely celebrated in over 100 countries. It’s a ‘people’s day’ for doing something to take care of the Earth and that "something" can be local, national or global, something you can do by yourself or with others. Everyone is free to choose. You can find out more about World Environment Day here.
In assembly, we announced an ‘adopt a planter’ scheme and every class now has a planter to take care of. The children will be designing labels for their planter, agreeing a watering and weeding rota and painting pebbles to decorate it. We are looking forward to watching the planters flourish over the next few weeks!

Summer Fair – Saturday 15th June, 12.00pm to 3.00pm
It’s less than a week to go until our Summer Fair!
A big thank you to all those who generously donated to our tombola this morning. However we are quite low on donations so if you didn't have the chance to bring anything in today, please remember that you can donate all next week. You can leave any contributions with the PSA team selling raffle tickets outside the KS1 gate or with the school office. Remember, the more donations we receive, the longer the tombola can run at the Summer Fair!
Please see the attachments to this newsletter for lots more information about the fair, but here are the essential things to remember:
Raffle tickets. These were sent home earlier this week. Tickets are £1 each and every child brought home two books of five tickets. Please buy as many tickets as you can – and remember to buy some for your friends and family as well. You can hand your completed ticket stubs plus payment to the PSA team outside school at drop off and pick up all next week who will also be selling more tickets. For a full list of all our prizes on offer, please see the Summer Fair attachment to this newsletter.
What’s on at the Fair. Brand new attractions this year include a disco dome, didi cars, skateboard simulator, crossbow challenge, buzz wire and high striker plus a chilled-out picnic area, four fantastic competitions and the chance to name the newest residents of the Secret Pond! All your usual favourite attractions will be there as well plus a wonderful selection of delicious food and drink to choose from throughout the day.
Tokens. Please note that in keeping with this year’s theme, stalls in the KS1 playground will be paid for with tokens. Tokens are worth 50p each and can be purchased with cash or by card using our new izettle machines during the fair, or at drop off and pick up on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th June. Please be aware that tokens are non-refundable but there will be plenty of chances to use them at the fair.
Competitions. We’re running four different competitions at the fair: sunflowers, junk robots, portrait and baking. Entries for the sunflowers, junk robots and portrait competitions should be delivered to school reception by 9.00am on Friday 14th June (the day before the fair). Entries for the baking competition should be delivered to the Main Hall on the day of the fair between 9.30 and 11.00am. For full details of all our competitions, please see the attachment to this newsletter.
International Food Stall. Please email fernhillpsa@gmail.com asap if you’re able to provide a dish for this hugely popular stall. Dishes can be hot or cold, savoury or sweet – but must be meat free and nut free please. All dishes can be dropped off at the Summer Fair on the day.
Cakes for the café. Please leave any donations of cakes, cupcakes and biscuits (home-made or shop-bought) in school reception on Friday 14th June or drop them off at the café in the Small Hall on the day of the Fair. Thanks in advance for your donations!
Summer Fair – sunflower fact of the week
Sunflowers absorb toxins and thousands were planted after both the Chernobyl and Fukishima nuclear disasters to help decontaminate the soil.
Save the dates for your diary

The end of year PSA Summer Social Comedy Night will take place on Saturday 6th July from 7.30pm with a brilliant line-up of professional stand-up comedians! Please save the date and tickets will go on sale online after the Summer Fair.
