Year Group Newsletters
Well done to our second group of Year 5 children from Lime and Sycamore classes who completed their Bikeability cycle training programme today. 40 children in Year 5 attended the course this month, gaining practical cycling skills and learning how to cycle on today’s roads.
Gardening Club Sale
Next Wednesday, 26th June, the Gardening Club will be holding a tomato plant sale after school outside the Infants’ playground gates. All proceeds will be going towards new plants and resources for the planters in the Secret Garden.
Thank you!
Thank you very much to all our families who took the time to give us their views about Fern Hill and their child’s experience here. 460 of you completed the annual Parent & Carer Survey and we are very grateful for your feedback. Mr Scott announced the winners of the incentive on Monday during whole school assembly: well done Year 1, you will have your very own special mufti day before the end of term! Year 1 returned the highest number of completed surveys with an amazing response rate of 90%.
Festival of Primary Choirs
This week, our wonderful Juniors’ Choir performed at the Festival of Primary Choirs, hosted by Kingston Music Service and held at the Rose Theatre. The festival showcases school choirs from across the borough who are challenged with new and often complex pieces of music and gives the children the opportunity to perform in a professional theatre with live musicians. Children performed with their own school choirs and all together for an arrangement of massed pieces exploring the culture of ten different countries to support this year’s theme of ‘Our Wonderful World’. Thank you so much to our Choir Leader, Mrs Ingram, who has worked very hard with the children all year to prepare for their performance, and to Mrs Aurelius for accompanying the children at the Rose Theatre.
A huge well done to Fern Hill Choir who performed magnificently on Monday evening at the Choirs Festival. The theme of the festival was Our Wonderful World and the concert started with all nine school choirs on stage waving flags and singing from the stalls. We were led onto the stage by Rais who was waving an enormous flag representing India. It was really spectacular and at the end of the final song, we were showered by confetti raining down from above!!
For our own songs, first we sang Kothbiro (Rain is Coming) which is a Ghanian song about calling the family to prepare to collect water from the approaching rains. Next we sang the well-known Kinks classic, Waterloo Sunset. A big shout out goes to our Year 6 singers Myrah, Dylan, Sofia and Max who had special singing role; we will miss their voices next year!
- Mrs Ingram, Choir & Orchestra Leader
The KS2 choir performed excellently in the concert. I was very proud of them and they set an excellent example for the school. The soloists were impressive and I loved everyone's dance moves. What a night to remember!
- Mrs Aurelius, Year 1 class teacher
The Fern Hill Choir will be performing their songs again at the Music Evening next Tuesday at school.
Celebrating the NHS
We were joined again this week by the Bounce Theatre group and this time it was Year 5’s chance to explore the history of the NHS and celebrate its 70th birthday. Through drama and art in a ‘waiting room’ setting, the children learnt about how hospitals were run before the NHS – an individual, called an almoner, would decide if a person was poor enough to be allowed into a hospital for medical care free of charge or rich enough to pay for a doctor and not allowed in – and the central role the NHS plays today – did you know the NHS treats over one million people every 36 hours and employs nearly one million members of staff?
You can find out more about the history of the NHS and how it has shaped are lives over the past 70 years here.
The art work created by Year 3, 4 and 5 children will be included in an installation called The Waiting Room at The National Archives in Kew from 2nd – 4th July celebrating highlights of the 70 years of medical research and developments within the NHS. The Waiting Room will also asks us to think about how we feel while we wait to be seen or treated, and the thanks or otherwise we give back to the people who keep the heart of the NHS beating.
Library Book Search Parties Needed!
It's that time of year again when we need to start checking the library stock so we are asking all our families to check at home for any Fern Hill library books that may be hiding somewhere!
All school library books are stamped with the school name and books which live in the juniors’ library have a small barcode on the inside front covers. We have invested an incredible amount of money in new books over the last 18 months so it is vital that all books are returned to us to ensure everyone can continue to enjoy them next year.
Children will still be able to access the libraries next week but all books must be returned to class teachers by Friday 5th July. For the last two weeks of school, children should bring in reading material from the local libraries or from home.
Any missing books will be subject to a £5 fine which can be paid via Parent Pay. You will be sent a notification via ParentPay if this applies.
Thank you in advance,
Mrs Vincer, Miss Gattey and Mrs Eakin
