Year Group Newsletters
Year 6's newsletter will be available on the website on Monday
Curriculum Evening
Please save the date for our whole school Curriculum Evening which will be held on Tuesday 8th October at 7.00 pm. Our last Curriculum Evening in April was a great success with very positive feedback from the parents who attended and we hope you can join us once more.
We will be following the same format to the evening with four sessions which you can attend in rotation. One of the sessions will focus on Maths Mastery and will be followed up in November with a class drop in for you to join your child to see Maths Mastery in action. The other sessions planned will cover science, reading and wellbeing. Further details on how to reserve a place will be sent out next week.
If you’d like to know more about the content of the Curriculum Evening held earlier this year, please click here.
Drop off arrangements for Reception children
Please may we remind parents and carers that from next week, a member of staff will open the gates to the Reception outdoor play area to greet you and your child. They will take any important messages that need to be shared with the teachers who will be focusing their attention on welcoming the children. If your child is happy to say goodbye to you at the gate, they can walk across the play area to their classroom on their own.
Welcome back to the new school year and the first edition of our whole school weekly newsletter. At the start of this new school year, we will be talking to the children about how they should present themselves and behave in school and we would be grateful for your support with the following:
Illness & Absence
If your child is ill or absent from school for any other reason, please let the school office know by 8.30 am. You can email them at: office@fernhill.rbksch.org or telephone them on 020 247 0300. The school office staff spend a significant amount of time every morning checking on children who are absent from school without a reason.
Earrings
Earrings, including small studs, are not permitted for health and safety reasons. If your child arrives at school wearing earrings, staff will use their discretion to decide if they should be asked to remove them during the school day or have them covered with micro pore tape. If your child has had their ears pierced during the summer holiday and their ears have not yet healed, please cover their earrings with a plaster or micro pore tape before they come to school. Once your child’s ears have healed, they should not wear earrings to school. We would appreciate your support with this policy.
Bicycles & Scooters
Bicycles and scooters (and skateboards!) must not be ridden anywhere on the school site at any time for safety reasons. Please dismount from them before entering the site on the Richmond Road. Scooters may not to left inside school during the day but can be locked to the bike and scooter racks we have available.
Parents' Welcome Meetings
Thank you to everyone who attended the Parents’ Welcome Meetings for Years 1 to 6. We hope you found them useful. The presentations for each year group are available on the website under the relevant year group page, along with the Curriculum Learning Maps and Home Learning Grids for this half term. Please click on 'Year Groups' in the drop down Menu box on the website to find your Year Group page.
There will be a meeting for our new Reception parents on Thursday 26th September at 9.00 am and our Nursery parents on Monday 30th September. Parents of children who attend the Daisy AM (morning) session are invited to the 9.00 am meeting and Daisy PM (afternoon), the 2.30 pm meeting. The presentations used will be posted on the website after the meetings.
Parent Consultations
Parent consultations for all year groups from Nursery to Year 6 will be held on Wednesday 16th October from 4.00 – 7.00 pm and Thursday 17th October from 2.30 – 6.00 pm.
This is an opportunity for you to meet with your child's class teacher to discuss your child’s progress and how they are settling into the new school year. You will be able to book your consultation online from Friday 27th September and we’ll let you know when the booking system goes live.
Please note that school will close at 2.00 pm on Thursday 17th October.
Team building in Year 3
Last Thursday, all of Year 3 enjoyed a terrific day out at Thames Young Mariners where the children took part in a range of activities stretching both their physical and mental abilities.
Armed with new map reading and orienteering skills, they had fun locating markers across the site, with the extra challenge of making sure that their group of five stayed together! It was lovely to see how they developed their empathy for each other, making sure no one rushed ahead or was left behind. The Challenge Course exercised their collaborative and listening skills - lots of children took on responsible leadership roles, solving problems for the benefit of the whole group.
Perhaps the most exciting part of the day was in the woodland area. What appeared to be a simple task - sparking a flame using flint and steel - required a great deal of resilience! It was a delight to see the children's faces change from intense focus to awe as their piece of cotton finally caught fire.
Year 2 at the Beach
Year 2 had an amazing time at West Wittering beach yesterday – the weather was fabulous and they had great fun collecting shells and seagull feathers to decorate some spectacular sand sculptures. Thank you to all the parents who joined us and to Mr Pantling who made sure our spot was safe and ready for beachcombing!
Year 6 in Northern France
Despite the early, pre-dawn, start of 5.00 am, Year 6 set off on their two day adventure to northern France with smiles on their faces! Following the journey on board Le Shuttle, we ventured to the historic town of Albert situated in the Somme region. We collected our guide and began an exciting, educational tour of the battlefields and trenches of WW1. Children and adults alike were amazed to see the sheer size of Lochnagar, a bomb crater measuring 100m wide across the top and 30m deep. From there we continued to the stunning memorial at Thiepval with the British and French war cemetery at its foot. The children were keen to search through the names of the missing soldiers, looking for their own surnames. One pupil, who had researched her family history before the trip, was able to find the name of her great-great-grandfather on the monument. We continued our journey to the Canadian memorial at Newfoundland Park, where we were able to walk through the remains of trenches and hear stories of amazing hardship and bravery. Our day finished at the underground museum in Albert, where we explored a huge number of artefacts dug up from battlefields nearby. After a delicious dinner of poulet et frites, we headed to the hotel, exhausted!
