Absence from School
If your child is going to be absent from school, please ensure you inform the school office by 8.30 am on the day. If your child is absent from school for more than one day, you should contact the school office every day that your child is absent. You can email the school office at office@fernhill.rbksch.org or you can telephone on 020 8247 0300. If you telephone and are put through to the answer machine, please leave a message. The school office spend a significant amount of time every morning contacting families to query absences which they have not been informed of and we would be very grateful for your support in minimising the need to do this.

Fern Speak
Congratulations and well done to the 34 children in Year 3 and 5 who have progressed through to the Fern Speak Finals which will be held next Thursday. They will be bringing home a letter today, inviting their families to come along and watch their duologue, poetry and public speaking performances.
Inclusion Coffee Morning
Thank you to all the families who attended our Inclusion Coffee Morning this week. We hope you found the workshop on child anxiety and strategies to help children overcome worries and behavioural difficulties informative and useful. Anna, the Practitioner from the Children’s Wellbeing Service who delivered the workshop, has produced a guide for parents specifically on how to talk to your children about the coronavirus. This is attached below.
On Thursday, the children enjoyed a special assembly for World Book Day. They admired each other’s costumes, explaining why they liked their favourite ones and teachers shared their treasured reading books and poems. At lunchtime, we held a book character hunt around the school (which has continued outside today, now that the rain has given way to brilliant sunshine!) and later in the afternoon, classes had a visit from a mystery reader, who read their favourite story to them. The children celebrated their love of reading with lots of different book related activities in class, even creating mini-books of their own. As always, the children and staff looked fantastic in their costumes!
Please look out for your child’s £1 National Book Token which was sent home with them this week. You can use this token to get a World Book Day Book for free or £1 off a book or audiobook at your local bookseller. If you don't find it in your child's bag, feel free to pop by the school office where we have some spares.
Don't forget to book your Parent Consultation meeting...
Parent consultations for all year groups from Nursery to Year 6 will be held on Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th March. This is an opportunity for you to meet with your child's class teacher to discuss your child’s progress.
Consultations can be booked online at: https://fernhillprimary.parentseveningsystem.co.uk
Please note that the booking system will close at 12.00 pm on Thursday 12th March.
You will be able to book a ten minute consultation with your child’s class teacher during the following times:
Wednesday 18th March - 4.00 pm – 7.00 pm
Thursday 19th March - 2.30 pm – 6.00 pm
There is an extra consultation date available for Nursery children only, on Monday 16th March from 9.30 am – 2.30 pm.
If you have had an SEN review - or have one scheduled - you do not need to book a separate parent consultation using this system.
Please note that school closes at 2.00 pm on Thursday 19th March.
After school clubs will run as usual but at the revised time of 2.00 - 3.00 pm. Tree Tops will be open from 2.00 - 6.00 pm. There will be limited capacity in Tree Tops on this day and sessions must be booked in advance by Friday 13th March.
If your child attends a club on Thursdays and is already booked onto the Tree Tops late afternoon session at 4.30 pm, they will automatically be registered to attend from 3.00 pm when their club ends. There will be no charge for this extended session. The early half session will run from 2.00 - 4.30 pm.
The national curriculum for Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) for Years 1 to 6 is changing and from September 2020, a new statutory framework will apply to all schools.
We are holding a Parents’ Briefing for families on Monday 30th March to explain the content of the new curriculum. The briefing will start at 9.15 am and will be held in the Large Hall. We will be sending out further information on how you can register your attendance next week.

PSA News & Events
Bounce for Books
Bounce For Books took place today and the children all had a wonderful time bouncing on the two giant bouncy castles in the main hall.
A huge thank you to all the parent volunteers who gave up their time today to help count the bounces. We couldn’t run this event without the amazing support we receive from parents.
Please don’t forget to return your sponsorship form and money to your class teacher by Friday 13th March. All the money raised goes directly to buy more books for the children at school. Thank you so much for your support and we’ll look forward to announcing how much this year’s event has raised very soon.
Mothers’ Day Breakfast – Friday 20th March
To celebrate Mothers’ Day, we are holding a Mothers’ Day Breakfast at school on Friday 20th March from 8.00 to 8.45am in the Main Hall. This is a free event, but tickets must be reserved for both children and adults to allow us to cater for the correct numbers. Please ensure you book a ticket for each person attending – for example, a mother attending with one child should book two tickets. Due to space restrictions, only children currently attending Fern Hill (Daisy class to Year 6) can attend. Booking will open this Sunday 8th March at 8pm via the following link:
https://www.pta-events.co.uk/fernhillpsa/index.cfm?event=event&eventId=26836#.XmEJG9pCdPZ
We will need plenty of lovely volunteers to help out on the morning and we'd particularly like volunteer dads so the mums can enjoy their breakfast! If you can help, please email fernhillpsa@gmail.com
Please come along to our next PSA meeting – Thursday 12th March
All parents are very welcome to come along to our next PSA meeting in the Small Hall on Thurs 12th March from 7.30pm onwards. This is a great forum to share ideas and chat about future events, so please come along and join us.
Thank you for your support,
Fern Hill PSA.
