CHILDREN RETURN TO SCHOOL
Key dates for the spring term are available to view on the school website calendar and here.
Term dates for this school year and next are published here.
Reminders
Times of the school day
Since the start of term, a significant number of children have been late to school. The times of the school day are published on the website here. If your class is operating as a bubble, the start and finish of their school day will be different, and you will have been informed of the new times by letter.
Bikes & scooters
Please do not leave bikes and scooters on site overnight or at the weekend, even if they are locked. The black gates next to school reception are often open in the evenings and over the weekend to allow access to both Fern Hill and The Kingston Academy for club providers.
Weekly News
Don't forget that your year group weekly news is posted every Friday afternoon on your child's Home Learning Google Classroom. Click here for information about how we use the Google Classroom.
The second Parents' Evening of this school year will be held immediately after the Easter break on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st April. At present, we are planning a blended approach as we did in October with virtual appointments by video call on the Wednesday and in person appointments at school on the Thursday. Appointments will be available to book after the half-term break.
To mark The Queen's Platinum Jubilee, schools will have an additional INSET day. Fern Hill’s will be on Friday 27th May 2022. We will celebrate the Platinum Jubilee together in school on Thursday 26th May before finishing a day early for the half-term break.
Maths Learning Platforms
We are so pleased to announce the launch of a new home to school maths learning platform: RM Easimaths!
RM Easimaths is designed to help primary school pupils make confident progress in maths in a safe, fun and engaging environment. Activities are targeted to your child’s individual ability level through a personalised learning programme that allows them to move onto more advanced activities quickly and, at the same time, provides opportunities for revisiting skills and consolidating knowledge. Your class teachers will keep track of their progress and there are plenty of stickers and certificates as rewards for progress including a fun end-of-session game as an incentive to complete a set of activities.
To find our more about RM Easimaths, watch this short video clip.
Your child will be bringing home their login details – please check the front of their Home School Notebook. Log in here. Your child's username is unique to them; the siteid is the same for every pupil: Fernhill (capital ‘F’), as is the password: fernhill (lowercase ‘f’).
RM Easimaths is available on any device with an Internet connection – it is compatible with the latest versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari browsers and works on Windows. Mac, Android and iPads. If you have any queries about RM Easimaths or are having problems logging in, please speak to your class teacher.
To celebrate the launch of RM Easimaths and promote practice at home, we will be running a competition in school with prizes for the classes that complete the most activities online. The winners will be announced by Mr Scott on Friday 4th February when we will also take part in the NSPCC’s Number Day.
On Friday 4th February, children and staff can ‘dress for digits’ and come to school wearing an item of clothing with a number on it or get creative with a maths or number themed costume. In return, we’ll be asking for a donation of £2 to the NSPCC via our dedicated JustGiving page. Please look out for more information in next week’s newsletter.
For our younger children, you might like to try White Rose Maths’ new 1-Minute Maths app for daily practice.
It offers children engaging and easily accessible practice in basic number in one minute blocks and is brilliant for building number fluency and confidence. It’s free to download directly from the App Store, Google Play or Amazon Kindle.
We’ve had to make a few changes to the schedule for class assemblies this term: Bracken class will hold theirs on Friday 3rd February; Clover class on Thursday 10th February; Heather class after the half-term break on Thursday 24th February and Chestnut class at the end of term on Thursday 31st March. You can find the dates of all the assemblies on the website here.
