PSA Fireworks Night
The PSA are delighted to have been able to rearrange Fireworks Night for next Wednesday 9th November. The timings have not changed: the event will run from 5:45 - 7:00 pm with the display starting at 6:45 pm.
Chickenpox
There have been a number of isolated cases of chickenpox throughout the school. Please call or email the school office to advise us if your child develops any symptoms. Your child should not return to school until all the spots have formed a scab, usually 5 days after the spots appeared. For further information on chickenpox, please see the NHS guidance here.
Fern Hill Curriculum Evening
We are delighted to confirm details of our Curriculum Evening on Thursday 10th November 2022. This event is an excellent opportunity for you to gain a greater insight into aspects of teaching and learning at Fern Hill and will include Q&A with the Senior Leadership Team.
The evening will begin at 6.15 pm with refreshments in the Large Hall, followed by four workshops which will run consecutively and cover: the School Development Plan and priorities, our English and mathematics teaching methodology and how you can support your child’s progress in these subjects, and the platforms available for you to support your child’s learning at home. The evening will end at 8:30 pm.
To register for the Curriculum Evening, please click here. The closing date for registration is Monday 7th November at 5:00 pm. Please note that this event is for parents and carers only. We hope to see you there.
Remembrance Day
Next week, children and staff will commemorate Remembrance Day in the classroom and through special assemblies and the whole school will join a two-minute silence at 11:00 am on Friday 11th November. To support the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, our Year 6 children will be selling poppies in the morning and after school every day.
Save the date - the Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Fern Hill!
From Tuesday 29th November to Thursday 1st December, Mrs Rouillard, our school librarian, will be running a pop-up bookshop in school. During the school day, children will be able to browse over 200 fiction and non-fiction books, from award-winners and new releases to beloved favourites and bestsellers, and after school parent and carers will be able to buy them at amazing prices.
The bookshop will be open for purchases each day from 3:00 - 4:00 pm in the junior library (entry via the junior library door). This is a great opportunity to stock up on Christmas presents and, for every book bought, you will also help us to earn free books for our libraries.
The easiest way to pay for books at the Fair is to pre-purchase gift vouchers available here.
Book Fair Poster Competition
To help us spread the word, children are invited to design a poster to advertise the Book Fair for a chance to win a book voucher to spend. Please hand your designs to Mrs Rouillard by Tuesday 22nd November. Good luck!

Book of the Week: 'Wren' by Lucy Hope
Wren lives in a grand old house on the island of Anglesey in Wales in 1870. She loves to go out rowing on the Menai Strait in her coracle but above all she longs to soar through the sky, like her mother did before her accident. Wren’s father thinks she’s running wild and plans to send her away to a school for the re-education of wayward girls, which only spurs her on to build a flying machine so she can escape. And there’s something going on with Wren’s house—cracks are appearing in the walls, and she keeps hearing strange noises as though the house is singing. 'Wren' is a thrilling historical adventure, steeped in Welsh mythology, with a stunning twist at the end. Highly recommended!
If you are looking for more book recommendations, don't forget the Fern Hill 100 Book Challenge published on the website here and also in the front of your child's Home School Diary.
Fundraising for the BBC Children in Need Appeal
On Friday 18th November, we will be supporting the BBC Children in Need Appeal Day with an amazing day of fun, excitement, and fundraising - The Great SPOTacular! It's a Mufti day so the children do not need to wear school uniform but we do hope to see lots of spotty clothing! We'll be selling a limited number of Pudsey pin badges (£1) and keyrings (£2) in the run-up to the day and the PSA will be running a special cake sale on the day. Look out for more information coming home soon.
