Tree Tops
If you plan to use Childcare Vouchers or Tax-free Childcare (TFC) payments to pay for Tree Tops sessions next term, please ensure you arrange for their transfer by Monday 20th March to ensure that they reach us and can be processed before the end of term. The school is closed over the Easter break and any vouchers or payments received after this date will not be processed until school reopens.
Lunches for the summer term
School lunches for next half-term will be available to order through ParentPay from next week. Please look out for an email from ParentPay to tell you when the menu goes live. Lunches for the week of 17th April will need to be ordered by midnight on Sunday 9th April.
Your year group weekly news is published every Friday afternoon on your child's Home Learning Google Classroom. Don't forget the home learning activities for this half-term that are due by Friday 24th March for the Home Learning Showcase.
The Parents’ Evening System is now closed for bookings. If you have not yet made an appointment to speak to your class teacher, please contact the school office. Don't forget that school closes early on Thursday 30th March at 1:30 pm.
This week's Times Tables Rock Stars class winners are Beech, Yew, Lime and Willow. Well done!
Next term's extracurricular lunchtime and after school clubs for children in Years 1 through to 6 will be available to book next week. Please look out for an email from ParentPay with further information. Next week is the last full week of clubs for this term.
We will be running the following catch up clubs over the last week of term:
Monday 27th March - Start to Sing at 3:30 pm; Wednesday 29th March - Choir at 3:30 pm; Thursday 30th March - Keyboard at lunchtime; Friday 31st March - Athletics & Pottery at 1:30 pm.
Thank you for your donations to Comic Relief today. Our JustGiving page will be open for a few more days if you would still like to make one and we'll let you know what we've raised together next week. Thank you to the children, and staff, for all the effort they have put into their costumes today and to the PSA too for running the cake sale after school.
World Book Day
Don’t forget to use your World Book Day £1 book token by Sunday 26th March; tokens have already been sent home with the children but we do have some spares in the school office if you've lost yours. You can collect your free book from most bookshops and supermarkets, or use the voucher for a discount off another book. Find out more about the books here.
Our Friendly Ferns are looking for new play resources! If you have any board games at home that you no longer use, they would love to have them: complete jigsaws, Uno, Kerplunk, Connect 4, Jengo, Scrabble, Guess Who? etc. Friendly Ferns is a special lunchtime club for children in Years 3 - 6 who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the playground at breaktime, enjoy some quieter activities and make new friends...
PSA Mother's Day Breakfast
Thank you so much to our PSA for running a busy Mother's Day Breakfast today in the Large Hall. We are very grateful to all the dads for hosting and serving and all the families who supported the event with a donation.
Young Artists’ Summer Show is a free, open submission exhibition for students aged 4–19. If your child would like to submit an artwork, just follow this link and select Fern Hill Primary as your school. Registration and submission is open until 29th March 2023. Each student can submit one artwork and there is no theme. When you enter, you’ll be asked for an image of your child’s artwork plus some information about the piece such as title, size, and a little text about it. It will be seen by a panel of judges and arts professionals and the selected pieces will be displayed online and on-site at the Royal Academy of Arts when the exhibition opens in July.
Book of the Week
'Let's Chase Stars Together' by Matt Goodfellow
Spark! School Book Awards Poetry Shortlist
A collection of powerfully emotive and beautifully written poems, ideal for older children, about family, friendship and growing up. Among my favourites were: 'It's Always the Same' about a vulnerable child who lacks the protective armour that stability provides, the lyrical 'When You Get Sad You Speak Like the Sea', 'Guess What' about finding a friendship that seems like destiny, and 'The Wolf' - a metaphor for divorce. These poems made me cry - highly recommended!

PSA News & Events
Bag2School Collection - Thursday 23rd March
Next Thursday 23rd March we will be holding another Bag2School collection - a really simple way for us to fundraise for the children. Bag2School specialises in the reuse and recycling of good quality second-hand items and the PSA will receive money from the company based on the weight of what we collect. Please bag up your items and leave them on the trolleys at drop off or pick up next Thursday.
A reminder that the following items are accepted: men’s, women's and children’s clothing; paired shoes (tied together or elastic band around); handbags; hats, scarves, belts and ties; jewellery; lingerie and socks; soft toys; household linen, curtains, towels and bedding (bedsheets, pillow cases and duvet covers).
Please, NO duvets or blankets; pillows or cushions; carpets, rugs and mats (including bath, shower and toilet mats); soiled, painted, ripped or wet clothing; school uniform items with and without logo; corporate branded clothing and workwear; textile off cuts, yarns or threaded material.
Comedy Night - Friday 24th March
There is still time to grab your ticket to a night of top quality comedy in the Large Hall! Tickets are £20 including your first drink. Please support this event and book via this link.
PSA Easter Egg Hunt - Saturday 25th March from 1:30 - 3:30 pm
It's not too late to join the EYFS and KS1 Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday 25th March from 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm - tickets are now available to buy via this link!
Tickets are just £1 for adults and £3 for children and include access to the egg trail, a prize, bunny face paint and Easter crafts! Please note that this event is for children in Nursery - Year 2 and their younger siblings only. Children in Year 3 - 6 will be warmly invited to take part in a separate trail over the Easter break. Thank you for your understanding.
Easter Holiday Trail
We are delighted to announce the very first Fern Hill Easter Holiday Trail! The whole school is invited to join in with a local Easter egg hunt, which is being kindly supported by some wonderful local businesses.
The Trail will be available from 1st - 15th April, to coincide with the Easter break. Children will receive a map and quiz sheet and will need to spot the Easter eggs which have been hidden in the windows of participating houses.
It costs £1.50 per child to enter the Easter Trail - tickets will be available from Monday 20th March at 10:00 am via this link.
We will send you a map to print off to get you hunting, and you can choose whether to end the Trail at the Queens Head or Canbury Secret. Just hand over your map to receive a treat! There are also ‘Big Egg’ prizes available for one correctly completed map per year group. All completed entries will also be entered into a prize draw specially for the grown-ups! We have been kindly gifted two fantastic prizes - a two-course meal for two with wine at the Queens Head and a £20 gift voucher from Bevans Butcher.
There are drinks offers available at both the Queens Head and Canbury Secrets when you visit to hand over your completed map - receive a free kids drink with every adult drink purchased.
Please indicate where you intend to finish the trail in the box provided to help us gauge how many treats to leave at each venue.
If your child cannot receive a chocolate egg, please mark that on the form where indicated, and we will arrange an alternative prize if they’re the ‘Big Egg’ prize winner.
Thank you!
