A message from Mr Scott
I am delighted to have been able to begin a phased transition back to normal school life this half-term. We’ve welcomed some visitors into school to bring the curriculum to life with workshops on knights and castles, the Great Fire of London, and crime & punishment. The children thoroughly enjoyed their skipping workshops and we came together as a community for Number Day to celebrate maths and raise a fantastic amount of money for the NSPCC. After school clubs and class assemblies returned and our Year 5’s experienced their first trip out of school for over a year with a visit to Thames Young Mariners.
We will be continuing a carefully phased transition next half-term as we move to year group bubbles. This means that the children will be able to enjoy their lunch and play times with their whole year group rather than just their own class. It also means we can return to year group assemblies and, even better, see our Year 6 children celebrate their time at Fern Hill all together, as a year group.
Our plans are of course subject to government restrictions easing and any changes to Department for Education guidelines. All the control measures we have had in place to keep our community safe since the start of the pandemic will stay in place until the end of term. Please continue to wear a mask when you are on the school grounds and keep social distancing at drop off and collection.
As always, a huge thank you to all our families for your support and understanding as we move towards the end of a difficult and ever-changing academic year. The children have shown remarkable resilience throughout and I look forward to seeing them back in school after the break, refreshed and ready for an exciting final half-term.
COVID-19 contact tracing over the half-term break
This week, you will have received a letter from Mr Scott regarding COVID-19 contact tracing over the half-term break. If your child tests positive for COVID-19 while the school is closed, you must contact us via the school mobile phone on 07930 171 164 to let us know.
To facilitate community asymptomatic testing we have also sent home a COVID-19 Self-Test (Rapid Antigen Test) kit. The kit contains seven tests to be used at home by the adults in your household before your child returns to school on Monday 7th June. Testing is an effective way of limiting transmission of the virus and ensuring that our school remains COVID-safe when we return. It is recommended that testing is done twice a week, with each test taken three to five days apart. An ideal timeframe would be to test on Wednesday 2nd June and Sunday 6th June.
You should upload the result of your test, whether positive or negative, here. Please inform us immediately if your test is positive and arrange for a PCR test to confirm the result. You can have a PCR test at your local testing centre or you can order a home test here. You should self-isolate until you have the results of your PCR test.
If a positive result is confirmed, you and your household should self-isolate for a period of ten days. Please tell us that your child is self-isolating and will be absent from school by 8:00 am on Monday 7th June. You can contact the school office as normal by email at: office@fernhill.rbksch.org or by telephone on 020 8247 0300. Thank you for your support.
Trips at last!
“This week, for the first time in over 12 months, the Year 5s went on a trip. We went to Thames Young Mariners on Wednesday 26th May with all 90 children. What a lovely day we had! We were very lucky with the weather, the instructors were brilliant and the children challenged themselves throughout the day. We all took part in raft building, open canoeing and orienteering activities. In each of these, the children had to collaborate as teams to be successful and they listened attentively to the instructors throughout. The children were tired, but still buzzing with excitement when they were collected. It was a great day — well done to everyone involved!”
— Mrs McLaughlin, Year 5
WOW! 14th — 18th June
We will be celebrating Walk to School Week (WOW) next month and encouraging the children to travel sustainably (walk, scoot, cycle or park and stride) to school every day for one week.
WOW is run by the UK charity Living Streets who campaign to achieve a better walking environment and inspire people to walk more. WOW is an annual challenge to raise awareness of why walking matters and encourage children to be more active. Walking has so many benefits from physical to mental wellbeing, aiding concentration and creating safer, less polluted streets. All that makes for a happy, healthy child set up for success in and out of the classroom. This is more important than ever with the children having missed out on so many sporting activities & clubs over the past year.
You can find out more about WOW and how to get your family walking here.
